Torrent speed problems - tago - 12-26-2008 12:11 PM

Hello,

I've been reading quite a few threads about this kind of problem, but couldn't find what I was looking for.

I've installed Transmission, but after a whole night of testing, I verified that I was getting very poor speeds. It downloaded about 250mb in a whole 10 hours, making a mean speed of about 7kb/s.
By looking at the speeds, I noticed it continued to bounce up and down: with a low of 2kb/s and a maximum of about 100kb/s. Upload speed reached 150kb/s.

I'm now trying the default bittorrent client again, as suggested in many threads, but I'm not getting good results. Right now, I'm downloading at 25-30kb/s while uploading at 100kb/s (I've limited upload speed to that, so it is fine: the only problem is download speed).

I'm using a PCH A-100, and I'm on a 15mbit internet connection. On my computer with uTorrent, I can get speeds over a mb/s.

EDIT: I forgot to say the device is on a wired 100mbit network, behind a ZyXEL router and then the modem. Both ports 51413 and 8881 are of course fowarded.

I hope I can do something to improve the download speed. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you very much

I had the same problem, but my solution didnt work for you. My only problem was the port forwarding.

I'm using transmission, 1.41 and after i used the port forwarding it was fine. Still slower than what i get from uTorrent but still very good.

the only thing i can think of is dont download a lot of stuff at the same time(this is if you download multiple files). I usually just download two at a time, and turn 5-8 at a time when i go to sleep. Other than this i dont know.

Maybe try to change the ports, both on the PCH and your router. Also check if your router has firewall settings like mine, that maybe your problem to.

Thank you for your reply, but the ports don't seem to be the problem..

I've just tried updating Transmission to 1.42. Things seem to have gotten better, but I doubt it is because of the update.

I have added a couple of other torrents, now I have 3: I have reached a top speed of about 350kb/s, but it is still incredibly bouncy.. It often gets to a low speed of 4kb/s.

The torrents themselves shouldn't be the problem, as they have thousands of seeds and peers.
