The drive may overheat and burn out, especially if it's a Seagate. That is so cool.
About 50% of the time I have a bare drive sitting on my desk with my PC's guts exposed. The wife hates it. It looks like there is an e-sata/USB version coming soon which would be ideal. |

I've destroyed hard drives by running them on the bench with no heatsink. The same drives ran cooler when bolted to a PC enclosure. The enclosure side-rails conduct the heat away from the drive. The drive in question was from Seagate. Seagate drives tend to run much hotter than other brands. I replaced the Seagate with an IBM (now Hitachi) drive. The IBM drive was quieter and ran much cooler. I had no problems running the IBM drive without a heatsink. Seagate replaced the failed drive under warranty. I reinstalled it in a fanned enclosure and had no further problems. If you are adding a drive to the A-100, pick one that runs cool. Overall, I've had the best luck with Western Digital drives. They run cool and have given me the least amount of problems. We use them at work with computers we purchased from Dell and have had several failures. The Maxtor, Western Digital, and IBM Deskstar drives that I've used all ran cool. I've had reliability issues with Maxtor and IBM DeathStar drives. WD is the only brand I've used with no issues. I can't comment on the 2.5" drives. The only problem with WD drives is that they are a little offset compared to the holes in the bottom panel... You cannot fit them with the screws.
