The de-interlacing thread
There are quite a few PCH owners (me included) who need to use it for interlaced video. Examples: people who watch direct DVD rips (iso or vob files), and video made with camcorders. I've seen a few threads here were people complained about de-interlacing artifacts with PCH.
I heard the PCH's CPU can do de-interlacing. I decided to check that. I am from NTSC world, so I used NTSC version of HQV Benchmark DVD (SD), which I ripped to my PC and streamed the vob files to PCH. For HD, I used the free video test patterns from here (1920x1080). My setup: full HD TV connected to PCH via HDMI. On PCH, I set 1920x1080x60p output. The results: terrible! PCH failed big time all the de-interlacing tests, both SD and HD. Everything was very bad: motion based de-interlacing (which applies to home-made video), 2:3 pulldown (most of commercial NTSC DVDs), 2:2 pulldown (modern HD camcorders with 30p frame rate), etc. For comparison, I ran all the HQV tests on my Samsung Blu-Ray player (BD-P1200), connected the same way (1920x1080x60p) to my TV, also via HDMI. Results - almost perfect. (This player uses a state of the art HQV video chip, so it was not surprising.) I have a big problem with this. I've made a lot of home (SD) videos in the recent years, and plan to buy an HD camcorder. Now it looks like PCH cannot properly (or at all) de-interlace these sources. I see two possible explanations: (1) SMP8635 does a very bad job in de-interlacing, or (2) SMP8635 can do de-interlacing well, but PCH doesn't enable this functionality. In the first case, we are all screwed, in the second, there is some hope that the situation can improve via a firmware fix. Has anyone else made similar tests? Please post your results here! |

RE: The de-interlacing thread
My configuration:
Sony 32V4500 TV PCH-A110 HDMI connection, 720p I have problem with .ts-video (sat. transport stream) maked by DreamBox 500. Popcorn Hour does not deinterlacing video files. At viewing characteristic "comb" is visible. Test file - http://yy.lv/upload/index.php?ACT=4&f=39984 Interlaced screenshot - http://www.imagebam.com/image/42e5fb34183878 |

RE: The de-interlacing thread
#Syam and booster
If you have lots of interlaced sources, you could output interlaced instead of progressive, and let your TV do the deinterlacing. Just change output to 1080i instead of 1080p for these sources. Im aware it doesnt "solve" the problem of poor deinterlacing, but its a workaround for now. I use a player for viewing of different files and I do not wish to change settings each time. I tried to change the resolution to 1080i, but it has not given any results on quality of video. Sigma 8635 processor has in specifications this feature: http://www.sigmadesigns.com/public/Produ...630_br.pdf ..... Motion adaptive deinterlacing .... Such feature is intended just for such cases? Source is interlaced, output - progressive, why deinterlacing dos not work? It is an error in Syabas firmware or Sigma SDK? Hardware problem? |

RE: The de-interlacing thread
Retail dvds are 24p. Why would you need to deinterlace?

RE: The de-interlacing thread
I was referring to Syam, I didn't realize his post was that old though. I'm downloading your example file. I will let you know.

RE: The de-interlacing thread
You can see the information using a software called mediainfo - but I cant remember a tool off my head that will let you manually change the header
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net But Try the TS-doctor tool created to repair digitv recordings by a member here called Cypheros - and ask in his thread about changing the header - he knows lots about transport streams and how they are constructed. http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...p?tid=5624 Living room: C200/A200/A100 HDMI to Pioneer KURO KRP-500A plasma / Denon AVR 3808 / KEF 5005.2 / B&W DM685 Kids room: C200/A110 HDMI to Panasonic 42PZ85, Optical to Logitech Z5500.
