How to best set up a Full HD screen
I have a Samsung m87 46" screen. I have been using XBMC, and loved it. Went over to PH, but I can't get the quality of the picture to make any sence. I downloaded a Full HD movie (8 gigs), but the picture is a bit "Grainy".

I live in Norway and was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to set up the box to give the best possible picture. I am of course using the HDMI, and tried setting up HDMI 1080p.

Thank you for any assistanceSmile

If the picture is "grainy" its propably just a "film grain" effect desided by the producer of the movie - or caused be a poor encoding of the HD material.

Which movie release are we talking about ?

Theres nothing "grainy" about the picturequality caused by the PH - it delivers top notch picturequality

And theres really nothing special about setting up the box - you connect using HDMI and select the output to match the screen - in your case that would be 1080p

One way to test your display and PCH is to download one of the 1080p trailers at the Apple trailer website. Try "Horton Hears a Who" or "Ironman". Both of these trailers look great on my 50" Philips at 1080i. If they look as expected then it's the file/movie itself (i.e. bad/crappy encoding, etc).

"everything will be ok in the end. if it's not ok, it's not the end" - unknown

Got it from ""

I will try and down the apple trailiers, and leave feedback on what I experience. What I found strange, was when I set the screen to show "actual size", the picture was so tiny.

I will try just resetting all of the settings and chosing HDMI 1080p, and see if it does any good.

That particular movie is really grainy in the beginning, and then the director obviously tought "this film will look really cool if the cameraman is high on speed and is suffering slightly from Parkinssons disease. "

Btw, that film looks great on my 50" (LG) when it´s supposed to look good and crappy at times where the director tought it should.

I normally use HDMI set to AUTO - as this outputs 50Hz video at 50Hz and 60Hz at 60Hz. I have a Sony Full 1080 display.

The only bugbear is that file replay (but not DVD replay) usually defaults to 1080i not 1080p (meaning the display is de-interlacing to 1080p not the PCH) When upscaling VIDEO_TS or .iso it switches to 1080p in 50Hz or 60Hz though.

If I feel strongly about watching something in 1080p I can force it to 1080p - but for most files I have (which are off-air recordings in 1080i) there is no point.

My display doesn't refresh at 24Hz or a multiple - so 1080/24p is no use to me currently.
