ONKYO TXSR506B Black 7.1 Channel Receiver a good choice?
Hey all! I have a PCHA100 and am looking for a reciever that will help with decoding DTS since most of the HD-rips that I want are DTS instead of AC3. I got an email from newegg.com for deals this black friday and seen this reciever there and wanted to know if its a good buy or not? Right now I just have AC3 encoded mkv's playing through hdmi to Samsung 42" 1080p and sound via standard rca cables to an all-in-one dvd/stereo combo but am getting more and more dts ones in preperation of getting a dts reciever one of these days. Any advice is more than welcome and thanks!

Yep, onkyo are a good brand, the 506 is a little further down the range.
The 506 doesn't support HD audio, so you won't get DTS-MA or True DD, but then again you (like myself) have a PCH100 which doesn't support these. If you want to future proof yourself stump up for the 606, but honestly it's a good buy for that sort of money. I say go for it. Then treat yourself to a decent set of speakers when funds allow. |

It's also $200 more and will make no difference in terms of HD Audio playback on his PCH100, if he had a 110 I would probably have said different.

I am going off the same supplier that the original user posted, and it's $150 vs $340 which is $190 different.
Don't get me wrong I think the 606 is a better receiver, but then I think the 906 is better still, all depends on budget. |

Where at can you find the 606 for $250? The cheapest I have seen is $349. Price is a factor but I am thinking more and more of holding out and getting a better one a little while down the road instead of impulse buying this one cause its on sale friday.

$150 for the 506 is a good deal, and it won't devalue massively, in a years time it will still be worth $100+
I say go for it and upgrade when you have the cash

RE: ONKYO TXSR506B Black 7.1 Channel Receiver a good choice?
The problem with the 606 is that its video processing is poor. You could to try to find a deal for the 576 which does LPCM which gives you high def sound assuming you are using a player that can decode the sound into LPCM like the PS3.
My s5100 comes with an almost identical receiver to the 506 (power of 576 with features of 506) so I know the 506 well. Whether you will be able to tell the difference from a Lossy 1.5Mb DTS/640k AC3 vs LPCM/Lossless at less than reference sound levels is a very very very long debate. Audio: Onkyo HT-S5100 7.1 (Coaxial) Video: Sony KLV-52W400a (HDMI) BD/DVD: Sony PS3 (HDMI) Remote: (Shaun looks over the fence and says): Yes, lots |
