Browsing long lists
Hello all, I am completely new to this product. I got an A-110 for christmas and I have just started to use it. I wanted this to play music on, I have used a PS3 earlier, but found that it is very noisy sometimes. This item has no noise at all an is perfect for music in a quiet room.

I have one question at the moment, I am sure there'll be more of them when I learn this product better.

How can I browse quckly through long lists of folders. When I browse for albums, I have a list that is more than 2000 items long. If I want to go quckly to folder number 999, how do I do that?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards
Vinylman

Well, the PCH is slow at browsing. I have heard a rumor though that the browsing will be faster in the future when they use databases. (Can anyone confirm this?).

There are a few trix though to browse a bit faster.

*You can use "Page up/Page down" buttons (volume up/down) at top right of your remote to step down/up one page at a time.

*Each folder has it's own number as you can see in the list. If you know the number you want to go to, you can simply press the number on your remote and the PCH will browse directly to that folder.

*If you're at the top and want directly to the bottom you can also press the up-button on remote to get directly to the last item in the list, instead of browsing down down down down......

That's a starter at least...
Anyone got more trix? Please contribute. Wink

I am not able to go directly to a folder, except for those folders that are shown. If folder no. 15 is shown, I can push the buttons, but not 150!

From your answer, it seems, I cannot use this player for my needsl. I cannot 100 times on the page down button to go to folder 1400 for instance. That takes 400 seconds!!!

A not so very happy new user :-(

RE: Browsing long lists
Panic over the next firmware will allow you to enter a number and skip directly to that number in the browser. A long needed improvment for those not using videojukeboxes etc.

Excellent Smile.
...But chris57, will there be faster scrolling implementation aswell? It should be possible to cache the complete list of all the directories contained, to be able to browse them a lot more faster with databases what not...

Might I also ask when we can expect the next firmware to be released? =) (...even if this is the wrong thread)

RE: Browsing long lists
a database can definitly speed up the scrolling, but dont forget first it needs to build an db and update it also if new files gets added! anyway with the next update, as chris57 wrote, we improved the browsing speed and also added the jump to item feature, as example you have 5000 files in one folder Big Grin, with page up - down you have to press many times to go to item 2500 Big Grin, so with the next firmware you only have to key in 2500 and it will jump to this site and item.
Also the pageloading is improved, still not ultrafast but definitly better then it was on last final.
We will improve that more from time to time.

Werner

Smile I can alomst say I love you! hehe
Yeh well the database need to be loaded alright. But that might be worth waiting for Wink ...Still, if it loads in fragments. Say - first load first 10 items (that's displayed) as it does now, but meanwhile scrolling down, it loads the db further so that when reaching item 11, item 11-50 (for ex) is already loaded and so on. Get what I mean? Smile. I'm not an db expert but I have many theories Wink
Or to say... Might it not be possible to load meanwhile scrolling? Or that will still slow it down maby?

Cheers

RE: Browsing long lists
i think it will still slow down, but i know what you mean.
anyway first test will show us how it works, but this will need some time, so for now only the improvement i said.

That I am happy to know. I might soon be a very happy user then :-)

It would have been just as good, actually even better to skip using letters for instance. The first 3 letters in a folder name. But numbers will easily save me tens of minutes when browsing.

Kind regards

RE: Browsing long lists
You can skip via letters NOW, use a videojukebox such as YAMJ.

Remember i run this device without an internal HD, and I am only accessing shared network folders. I use a Synology DS508 for this. The A-110 seems to be very good at this, but my problem is the long lists. I use it for music mostly, the video bit is just a bonus for me. Just tried the ISO file reading today, and I worked perfectly.

The way I use the A 110 I cannot run a videojukebox. So a skipping with letters in long lists of folders would have been really nice.

RE: Browsing long lists
You could run a videojukebox on your setup quite easily.

You only need a PC to run the VJ app creating the html files. These can then be placed onto your Synology NAs and you can run it from there.

Thinking seriously about getting a Synology NAS myself. Would do exactly as described above and also gett llink running on it for http streaming.

RE: Browsing long lists
I don't want a video jukebox, I don't want pics or info on my movies - I just want a quick way to scroll though a long list of movies. A database with jump to file numbers would be great. Jump to a letter would be a better improvement IMHO.

Thanks for the tip. I will try this out when I have the time. I have tried using the bulit in DLNA server on the NAS, but found it to slow when using my ps3. A html type of interface is probably much much faster. So far the best solution I have found is. Tversity running on a computer and ps3 as player. Very quick browsing and Tversity transcodes almost everything to suit the ps3.

But as explained in my first post, I feel the ps3 is too noisy in a living room while playing music. And I hope A-110 will become what I am hoping for.

Kind regards
