Standalone Browser/Player for PCH
Is there any application that can be loaded directly to the PCH so that it can be used in a standalone mode, without a PC or internet connection? I just want something that I can access diretly from the PCH to browse music and videos, and select what to play. I don't need anything that is server-based and requires a PC and network connection.

Thanks-

I have a 640GB HD.... what I'm looking for is a browser on it that will allow me to browse music and video collections- and to play what I select- without having to have a PC connected to the PCH.

Benji's right. The box in itself already has all that is required to play back your media from an internal hard disk or an external USB hard disk.

It is preferable to install an internal hard disk, because it tends to improve USB performance due to a swap partition that helps the buffering process. You do not need to use the internal hard disk as your main storage if you don't want to. Some people just install a CF Card, thereby getting an almost completely silent solution.

Personally I use a 2.5" 250GB internal hard disk and 2 external 2.5" 250GB hard disks in USB enclosures.

If you want something graphically more appealing than the basic file browser (which does handle all your playback needs), you can also install a video jukebox. But this solution will require that you access and maintain the jukebox files with a PC now and then, in order to keep it up to date.

That seems to be the crazy part of all of this.... you seem to be stuck with the basic file browser, which isa wholly inadequate for a number of reasons. I see lots of people working on apps that are server-based, but there doesn't seem to be anything that can be loaded to the PCH itself. Why is the PCH so limited on ways to customize teh file browser and play capabilities? Is it because they are tied to Syabas?

Sure, I can add the Music Julebox and Video Jukebox, running from my PC, to get a better GUI, but that limits me on what I can without a PC connection.

Well there are a number of ways you can go. Try the start.cgi in the apps forum for "new" index files or you just can build your own.

The MSP is surely a "browser" for music and videos.

If you are not willing to have Yamj for static html, then check BigLarrys moviejukebox which is a stand-alone app inside PCH. This will let you go free from your pc.

there are some that run from the PCH........ but to modify and config those you will need to edit from the PC..... keyboard and mouse stuff.

just remember that the CPU and memory in the PCH is much more limited than in your PC and that will also limit the capabilities of a local jukebox

PCH-A100/A210/C200/A400 500GB EXT3 HDD<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Onkyo TX-NR1010<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Panasonic TX-P46S10 + 6 Bowers & Wilkins speakers.
10 NTFS 2TB USB drives on 3 hubs attached to the A400, 2 Seagate blackarmour NAS 3TB, 2 Seagate Central NAS 4TB.

The inability to setup and configure the NMT should not be disguised as a defect of the box...

This is entirely a matter of opinion! Smile

I have recently ditched a media centre PC - Couldn't play all the formats I wanted easily and the UI is a pain. I have all my MP3's organised in folders and thats how I wish to view them. On media centre, you have to view moves by icons which means you only see a few letters of the title of each move... gah frustating.

So I bought a PCH - Love it. The simple interface allows me to find my films and music and pictures easily with a minimum of fuss. It's played everything I have thrown at it and never dropped a frame.

My old mediacentre pc would take half an hour to boot up if you allowed time for windows update, ani-virus, etc to stabalize enough so you could watch a film - The pch takes seconds.

I admit that the photo browser could do with a little work, this is one area that the mediacentre pc did well - i understand that work is underway to improve this feature as well as the music player (please keep the directory browsing in).

I believe you can run the add-on music jukebox on the internal hdd - I have seen a patch for it. I have not bothered with it yet for the reasons above.

RE: Standalone Browser/Player for PCH
Yep the Music Browser userapp was initially designed with all of your mp3 files on the internal HDD. It would seem ideal for your music if its located on the internal HDD.

A400: SD Card(Apps), HDMI C200: USB(Apps), BD ROM (SH-B083L(SB01)), HDMI
CAT6 Wired Network: TV Panasonic TX-P42G20, HP ProCurve 1400-8G, Netgear GS-608/605, Synology CS407

RE: Standalone Browser/Player for PCH
You say without PC or Internet connection? How are you expecting the PCH to pull info for your better GUI? If you are just looking for a better interface, I'd suggest you look at the Theme/Skin subforum here or have a look at llink, which can be installed directly onto the PCH!

Are you just looking for something prettier? You need to be more clear on what you are looking for!

Thanks to everyone for their comments and contribution here.

Let me clarify that I have no problem using a PC interface for configuring any app, I just was looking for something that would run directly from the PCH, and not have to be dependent on a PC/Server connection to run.

Am I looking for something prettier? Yes, and no. I have no problem with the default menus for looks, but I would like to see something like the Music Jukebox that gives a better graphical interface to the music and video content (Album Cover Icons for instance). The way the system works out of the box with the myihome, if you place the music into folders, (which you have to do to get the PCH to find the MP3 album covers), you have to browse through each folder. Then you can only play what is in that folder, not everything in the library. Frankly, I would like something that looked a little more like the Windows Media Player Library, and even offered a bit more functionality such as the ability to set different views for the library (e.g., by song, by album, or by artist). Again, the way the system works out of the box with the myihome, If you want to play everything in your library, all the music has to be in the top Music folder. Then, you can see all of the songs in alphabetic order. Now you can use the shuffle capability from the myihome for playing the songs randomly, but if you are not connected to the myihome, I guess it will only play in the file order.

So, a better library interface combined with the shuffle capability is the top of the list. Next, I would like something that could actually read WMA tags. When you spend uncounted hours updating tags and album covers for your music library, it would be nice to actually see the info/images when playing the music. As the PCH works out of the box, it will only display the tag information from the music file, and display the album cover art, IF the song is in MP3 format. If you have WMA files, forget it. I don't like MP3 because it doesn't support a multi-channel sound... since I'm playing the music over a 5.1/6.1 system, the 2-channel sound from the MP3 gets pretty dull!

As a final note, I was told that the Music Jukebox has to be installed on a PC. If that means the PC has to be hooked up over a network and running to use it, then that is not the solution I was hoping to find.

Thanks again. Sorry for such a long reply, but I wanted to clarify what I am looking for,

Ron
