MPD installation howto (updated 4 May 2009)

RE: MPD installation howto (updated)
Nice to hear! prev<>next indeed have a little delay, toggle pause/play should be instantanious.

The audio quality is 100% determined by your USB device. I got a $4 usb audio stick from dealextreme and it sucked Smile

Also added sections for telnet control, ir remote control and uninstallation.

Hi gwillem,
great job. Thank you very much.
Now I'm interested in:
1) Logging played tracks to last.fm.
2) Playing last.fm stations with mpd using mcf script or something else. Mcf script works fine using Ubuntu but on pch it returns the following error:
Code:
/usr/bin # mcf a beatles
/usr/bin/mcf: export: line 77:
mdfive: bad variable name
Is it necessary to translate the bash script to ash?

Could you help me?

Greetings to Amsterdam

RE: MPD installation howto (updated)
... i could just cry.

been up all night. Nope, its not working anymore. I lost the connection / respons with minion, and tried to restart the program, and xp and it all.

Then tried to reboot the NMT, and some times I had access with putty, sometimes don't.

Tried to start over, uninstall the MPD installed it again, but now, i can't seem to get anything to work. Is it because ive installed the mpd too much? is there some way to get it ALL deleted and start from the top again?

Here are my start-over-code. Anything wrong?

Code:

I don't know if something should be called Localhost, because in minion settings the default settings was "localhost, port 6600" but I changed the minion settings to the IP of the NMT, and got it to work briefly.

Any ideas what i'm doing wrong?
I know you've allready used a lot of time with me.. sorry.

RE: MPD installation howto (updated)
@tonne: I cannot get mcf to work on Ubuntu (mcf from here), because the url it produces (add echo $STREAMURL to the end) gives "connection refused". Do you have a working streamurl? If you get one, you could feed that to mpc add. And yes, there is no bash on the NMT so you would have to rewrite it to ash (don't think it's possible), compile the bash script (don't think it's easy) or rewrite it to C or PHP (lot of work). However, you could put some working last.fm stream url's in a playlist and save this for later use (easy). Or, install Debian in a chroot environment as described elsewhere on this forum, and you will have a full fledged bash! This is probably the easiest option.

@andemad: first, try disabling the various bittorrent services because they take up a lot of CPU if you have unfinished torrents, when you start your machine (will slow down ssh/telnet). Second, try another brand of usb audio device. Otherwise, I ran out of suggestions :-( So I hope you get it working again.

RE: MPD installation howto (updated)
ok thanks. will do that. I do not use any of the services, but of course they're running default without any torrents in them. I'll try to disable them from the MyiHome menu.

What kind of USB audio would garantee work? (perhaps you know your kind of brand)

I've thought about:
Creative X-Fi Go
http://www.trustedreviews.com/pcs/news/2...X-Fi-Go/p1

No-Name USB
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HE-280B&cat=GDT

AND I don't assume I need to install drivers to the USB thing, right?

....I don't hope you are getting exhausted with all us who can figure things out themselves. You should know, that we appreciate it extremely much!

RE: MPD installation howto (updated)
Hi Andemad, I tried succesfully with both a USB audio stick from Sennheiser and Plantronics. The Plantronics uses, IIRC, the same chip as the very cheap Conceptronic unit (http://www.conceptronic.net/site/desktop...=CSOUNDU).

I'd say that most (98%) USB audio sticks should work with the drivers that I've provided, but of course various manufacturers implementations may vary... I hope you get it to work. It's sad that is used to work but not anymore.

Tried with 3 different USB Audio devices, but no luck. I hope, you have more great advises? Smile ??
Tried with some of your previous suggestions and commands. Can you see something out of this?

Andemad, please elaborate more on your situation.

Quote:after each reboot I can play music and hear it with the local commands, but at one point I seem to lose contact with it..

How many seconds does it play music at best? Does it play well when you don't switch tracks? When does it fail? Does it fail consistently?

My setup crashes occasionally, but after a reboot it's fine.

Of course. Anything you say Smile

1. I turn off the power of the HDX1000 and start the power again.
2. When its booted up, and no more activity (the LED is at "ON) i putty into the box using Telnet.
3. Start using commands ( i dont trust minion)

Despite the obvious security breach, I could let you get telnet access directly to the box, if you'd like... of course, I just don't hope you're loosing patience with me at the moment.

But if you'd like telnet access from web, i'll prefer to do it via PM or MSN (so I can instantly open and close the connection, depend on realtime chat with you Smile

But i sure owe some bottles of redwine next time i'm in holland, i guess Smile

RE: MPD installation howto (updated)
1. After mpc loses connection, what does "ps uxa | grep mpd" say?
2. If you reboot and just issue "mpc play", does it start/keep playing or does it crash without external command?
3. Try with a different set of MP3 files?

I never loose patience, just have limited time Smile

# mpc play
MPD_HOST and/or MPD_PORT environment variables are not set
error: timeout in attempting to get a response from "localhost" on port 6600
# ps uxa | grep mpd

nothing i quess..
2.: yeps. keeps playing without problems.
3.: just did.

I can make it crash everytime by writing "MPC Volume 50" or another number..Then when I reboot the player works again and the volume is on "50".

mpc play / stop / next - is working instantly and perfectly.
mpc pause / volume kills it everytime..

I'll try as soon as I get home again (I'm at work) - after 18.00CET, (denmark) - Smile

Can it be related to the "soundcore" module or something like that? The final guide SHOULD work perfectly, right?

Thank you for keep trying. I Soooo much want it to work! But I'm learning by every step we take, so before long I can help other guys with this Smile
As said before: You're welcom to get access by external Telnet, if you'd like.
