Your misunderstanding. Some of the services NEED to be able to access the HDD, that is why there is the optiion of just turning off the display etc.

You dont tell us which services in any case. If you can stop the HDD spinning up by disabling services then you are one of the lucky ones, It is those that cannot do this even when they have disabled 'services' that are really suffering.

A400: SSD+SD Card(Apps), HDMI A300: USB(Apps), HDMI C200: USB(Apps), BD SH-B083L(SB01), HDMI
CAT6 Wired Network: TV TX-P42G20, HP ProCurve 1400-8G, Netgear GS-608/605, Synology CS407

What worked for me [A-110, 1.5TiB Seagate 7200.11, spin-up with all S/W versions]:

1. Reset to default settings
2. Turn off every single network service, restart device each time

Thanks to everybody for providing additional information, hints and clues.
Great Community!

I have spin-ups in Standby with new firmware (but I also had them with former firmware version).

My hardware is:
A-110
Seagate 7200.11 (1TB)

My setup is:
No network, no Wi-Fi dongle, just simple HD movie/music box.

Configuration:
All services down, just one particular is always shown in "STARTING" status (do not remember which one now). Never used or will use Torrent/streaming etc.

For those that wonder why disabling Casgle stops the HDD spinning as NotDavid will tell you it is a podcast service that automatically updates the podcasts. That causes the HDD to spinup, turn Casgle OFF if you dont use it or use it but dont want to update it constantly.

The myihomelite server issue affects everyone and should be solved via the methods in the first couple of posts.

I have a share on my Vista PC to the video folder on my A110. Whilst on my PC right-clicking on just about any file will cause the NMT HDD to spinup especially if I hover near or over the 'send to' option, as its possible to send files to shares via right-click.
Annoying as not only does it cause spinup but also slows the PC at that time.

I'm sure there are many other reasons for spinup on each of our own specific network setup and hardware. When you see HDD Spinup Fixed in the release notes it simply means that a spinup issue that it was able to recreate in the Syabas Labs has been fixed. It doesn't mean that it is going to fix everyone's individual spinup problems.

I noticed that mine in spinning up as well regurarly, but I do have tvnzb running to check feeds. So this is normal I can assume as it also spins up at those times, but I do noticed that when it spins up it doesn't spin down after a certain time.

Is this normal?

edit:
I have the following processes running:
- tvnzb
- ftp
- samba

The question is why the internal hdd doesn't spin down after a certain idle time.
My HDX checks a certain RSS feed intermittently and the internal HDD turns on, but i don't understand why it doesn't shut down after a certain idle time. If he does that I think most of this issue will be resolved.

I don't know how or why, but it really did work for me! Thanks a lot!
(04-17-2009 08:31 PM)RavenNL Wrote:  The question is why the internal hdd doesn't spin down after a certain idle time.

Mine does now. It shuts down after 10 minutes of inactivity. Previously, it did spin up immediately after putting it into standby, and just kept going and going. Now, all of a sudden, it shuts down immediately when put into standby, and when accessed via one of the active services, it spins up, and spins down again after 10 minutes of inactivity. It's working like a treat. And I've got Samba, myiHome and UPnP services running. Unfortunately, I can't let the torrent service run idle, as it keeps my harddrive spinning, but it's a relatively easy workaround for me to stop it when I'm not downloading or seeding anything, and if I am, the harddrive has to spin all the time anyway.

Not sure what other services keep the harddrive spinning, or wake it up to never spin down again, but for me, it's actually working now. The harddrive does spin down now after a certain period of inactivity.

Darn! I think I spoke too soon. The only thing I did since when everything appeared to be working, was attach an external USB harddrive. I watched some stuff last night, and turned the unit off. Listened to the harddrive, and it did shut down. Checked it again before I went to bed, and it was still off, and rather cool. So was the attached external harddrive.

When I went down this morning, both, my external hard drive, and my unit, were both extremely warm, so there must have been activity on both, and for an extended period of time.

So, as it seems, something woke up both, and then neither seemed to have been shutting down after. Is there some process that I am neglecting here? Is there maybe some process that runs at particular intervals to check the filesystem, or I don't know what?

There certainly was no access to either the HDX or the attached harddrive from my end, as I've been sleeping soundly.

Any idea?

The only workaround I found avoiding the HDD spinning up, is to select source, setup and after power off. The only remaining issue is when I use nzbget: the HDD is still runnning after the complete download. Is-it possible to create a sh script to perform actions indicated here before? (power on, source, setup & power off)

Doesn't work for me Sad did everything as per original post, but HD still spinning after final standby.

I'm connected through ethernet and have no services running

Hmm.. seems after that failure, I decided to just start Samba so I can access the HD over network and after it was running, I went to standby and the HD actually powered down this time. Strange.

This behavior is new for me, and started after installing latest firmware/apps. Former, and the firmware befor that, did not do this.

Which firmware version are you guys using?

I also see this problem with firmware version: 01-17-090125-15-POP-403 released on 26 February 2009. ( don't want to update the latest one since it still has problem as stated in this forum).

The previous firmware did not introduce this problem. So, it must be a bug and need to be fixed.

[PCH A110 - Firmware: 01-17-090201-15-POP-403 - NO community software installed]
Guys, for me it's definitely Transmission who's causing the spin-up while in stand-by. Checked it, as instructed, by round-robin the running services. When I got to the Torrent service the problem manifested itself.

I have two torrents in the queue, but they are both paused. I can't believe this is normal behavior. I am afraid that this has no workaround (short of turning the Torrent service off) until the next NMT apps update.

My question is (excuse my ignorance, but there's a LOT of material on this forum): How do I report this problem to the developers?

Thanks in advance.
