Auto Download Feature
Hello,

I read most of the wiki’s and FAQ. But I'm not sure how to search or word this feature im looking for. To see if PCH has it.. I know you can FTP into the PCH to transfer the files. But since i dont have my PCH yet. I wanted to know is there a feature on the PCH to transfer file from the PC to the PCH without using a ftp program. I read in the Comparison that it can write in FAT but not NTFS. Maybe I could be wrong or I didn’t understand. Reason I ask this. Say the server is in another room. Instead of having to jump on the computer to transfer or watch the movie WIFI, I can just chose a transfer/download option on the PCH from the PC. (Lazy way I guess) Then it won’t slow down the internet when watching the movie. This might be a feature on the PCH already but I don’t see anything about it yet. Still searching thou! So I guess im getting at.. A download feature that can download 1 or more movie folder or file from the PC to the internal hard-drive of the PHC with out using a FTP program on the PC or Mac. A built in PHC transfer program… I hope this makes since and sorry in I’m in the wrong forum.

RE: Auto Download Feature
The PCH/NMT is one of the best players out there for ability to transfer as there are loads of different protocols,

You can use NFS, NFS-TCP, SMB, http etc to move files if you do not want to use FTP, whats wrong with FTP by the way?

If you want you can use the torrent or newsgroup clients to download to the PCH if you use an internal HDD. There are also RSS feed apps that will look every so often, automatically dowenload, unrar and place on whatever device in your network you want.

When you install an internal HDD in any NMT and load NMT apps it will format the internal HDD to Ext3. If you just drop a HDD in there and do not install NMT apps then it will still read and play the content but if NTFS it can't write to the HDD and if FAT then files >4Gb aren't allowed. You also cannot use the NMT apps such as SMB server etc if you do not install the NMT apps and thereby format to Ext3.

Formatting to Ext3 allows you to drag/drop via SMB to the internal HDD on your PC. FTP is the quickest transfer of files method and dead easy to do so again what's wrong with FTP?

RE: Auto Download Feature
probably because ftp has only one user login option wich supports 10 logins?
i think a lot of people would like to see more easy to use ftp config options.

for example.
in the nmt settings you can only start/stop the ftp server.
it should not be so difficult for developers to ad a menu where you can add ftp users and set read/write options per user or directories.
Also when i remotely acces ftp i onjly see the directories and some files, strangely enough not everything.
most dir's show empty while it does contain files.
I can't find anything about this how it's possible.

this would be a major update.

RE: Auto Download Feature
Hi chris57,

Well thanks for responding. Well let me put it like this. Say I have one server in the my room that hold all movie music, ect…

Say I have two PCH in the other rooms.. We all know mkv files are a killer on a wifi connection. So viewing the movies in both rooms (two mkv) will bring down the internet speed or making the movies choppy. Or if someone in the house is using the wireless too that will be slow. Also say I was sleep where the server is too. And didn’t want to be disturbed.

IT would be great for the people in the room to look on the server copy the files or more then one movie to the hard-drive in there rooms. So it would not take up wifi connection until it finishes uploading to the PCH. Plus there no chopping video because it was downloaded to the PCH HD. Also I can sleep with out someone having use ftp program on the server to transfer the movies to the other room.

Movis Button then option to download to PCH hard-drive. When done. They play, no more take up Wifi bandwidth , well if there downloading of course but when it's done it there. I hope this make better since. There nothing wrong with FTP I love it. Where would we be without it today? But some family members who come to visit in my house are not to computer savvy. But they do know how to press download, and play…. But no matter what you are 100% right. PCH is a astounding product no matter what..

RE: Auto Download Feature
sounds like to me your saying, you dont want the PCH to stream the entire movie... you want it to DL the movie to the harddrive and then play it so as not to put such a strain on the network?

well if you have a harddrive in your PCH, why not just keep all your movies on there in the first place?

RE: Auto Download Feature
Must admit im a little lost by the post above and could do with it clarifying as to exactly what it is that you want.

You can set the torrent download location to where you want with Transmission now so you should be able to actually download the file with the PCH front end but the location being on your server.

The mentioning of wifi worries me if you are talking about either downloading or streaming.
