AVCHD?
Can PH play the Sony AVCHD files created by some of their camcorders? I think that AVCHD is some form of H.264, but will the PH play them unedited?
I'd like to preview the raw files on the TV prior to editing them on the PC and converting to a form that I'm sure PH will play. AJ |

[PH] We have try both Sony and Panasonic AVCHD files that created by their HD Cancorder and plays well on A-100 NMT player. Popcorn Hour support team |

Great. Thanks for the reply.
Looking forward to using the A-100 to play the camcorder 15Mbps videos from my NAS. |

Wait, so I have a Sony SR1HD5 and it records in 1080i but in Sony's m2ts proprietary format. This unit plays these files in it's full 1080i rez?
Are you serious? |

Yes - these files are H264 with AC3 audio in a .m2ts container which is supported by hardware on this unit. M2ts is not proprietary sony format - and this unit plays them flawlesly in its raw form and full 1080 rez
Sounds good, doesnt it ? |

And, with Sony Vegas Pro 8, I can edit the raw AVCHD files, render them with the AVCHD template (H264/AC3), and play the final with the PH.
But, it takes a heafty CPU to edit. I can render a minute of video in 7 minutes with a dual processor HT 3.1GHz CPU. It would be better if it re-rendered only when it had to. PH is just the product I was looking for home theater use. |

Have you looked at the demo version of Elecard Converter Studio AVC HD? This will convert up to 15000 frames of clips to many formats, including DV which Vegas is probably better at handling. That amounts to an 8 minute clip, so unless you're using extremely long takes, it's fine for the conversion. If you want the unlimited retail version it's $75! But the demo version's fine, it doesn't watermark the output... They do some lower level cheaper products, but they don't have the flexibility of the full AVCHD Converter Studio. |

Thanks for the tip. Perhaps I don't know how to properly use the Converter, but when I convert a AVCHD file to DV25 for editing, the 6 channel audio is converted to 2-ch PCM.
I haven't explored it yet, but I think Vegas lets you edit using a low res proxy video stream and then re-link to the original files for final rendering. So much to learn about editing HD! |

I plugged my Sony SR8 camera in to the NMT using USB and it played the AVCHD .mts files just fine.
So I copied all of the camera's folders on to my network hard drive where all of my other video files are stored. But now when I click on the same folder which worked when on the camera - "Streams" - my NMT says there are no files to play! I checked with my laptop and the files are there. Anyone have any idea why this might be? Why would they play from the camera's HDD but not my NAS? |

I'm new to all this, but the AVCHD files are playing beautifully from my ReadyNAS NV+ over the A-100. Here's what I did: 1. Copied the .m2ts files created by the Sony Picture Motion Browser from my PC to the media/video share on the NAS. For testing, I also copied the .MTS files directly from the camera to the NAS (either way works). 2. From the A-100 Setup->Media Share menu, set the Workgroup name to match my home network name. On this same menu, selected the "nework share" button and browsed for and added the media share on the NAS. After adding, there's a new entry like: smb://NAS/media 3. Select the NAS:media source from the media source menu. 4. Navigate to the folder where the AVCHD files reside and select one. I may be telling you everything you already know, but this works for me. |

AJ500 Wrote:I'm new to all this, but the AVCHD files are playing beautifully from my ReadyNAS NV+ over the A-100. Here's what I did: AJ500, thanks for the reply. Well I'm using a Readynas NV+ the same as you. So if you can get it to work with MTS files, then I should be able to get this working somehow. All the other video files on my Readynas, like divx, play just fine, so its not a general network or NAS problem. If I plug the Sony camera into the A100 the hard drive inside the camera shows up in my media sources. Then I can browse to the 'streams' folder on the camera's hdd and play the .MTS files. But if I copy one of those same .MTS files to the NAS - no good. This is VERY strange. I will experiment some more when I have time. Maybe copy some files again. Perhaps something went wrong when I copied the files on to the NAS. |

Here's what I did: [PH] When A-100 communicate with your NAS, is it go thru media server (uPnPAV) access or Samba access? If go thru media server, my guess is media server filter out .MTS metadata. Please ask your NAS manufacturer to update their media server software. Popcorn Hour support team |

Still no success. I selected 'Stream copy' for the audio. For video, I selected AVI Stream type; DV25 encoding format; NTSC encoding profile. The converting dialogbox comes up and immediately terminates after creating a 246KB file. Looks like continuing to work with Vegas, editing either with the original or proxy files is the way I'll go for now. Hopefully, the NLEs will mature and provide better support for AVCHD editing. Adobe Premiere and Apple Final Cut are not there yet. The AVCHD rendered files are beautifully played by the A-100. |
