RE: Wireless dongle recommendation

I have some concerns though. I hope you can answers the following questions. - in a review of DAP 1522 I've read that the DAP 1522 can't be placed in a closet nor cabinet (because of loss of signal). Since my popcornhour is inside a cabinet, I need to place the DAP 1522 in a cabinet, although there's a possibilty I can place it outside and behind the cabinet and more to the corner of the cabinet (where theoretically it has more room to send its signal). Do you think it will connect on 5ghz?There's only 4 metres between the DIR 825, but I have to overcome two doors (my router is placed just outside my apparment). - furthermore i've read that the DIR 825 doesn't perform that well in mixed mode (only 40Mbs). Some of my laptops doesn't have a wireless N card, so i need to run in mixed mode. I'm afraid this might lead to chopping videos (Planet Earth has 44Mbs peaks i remembered). The DIR 855 has 58.5Mbps in mixed mode, which should be enough. The DIR 825 has 102.4Mbps in 5ghz mode though, which is also more then enough. So basically i have two options: buy a 855 (which is more expensive than the 825) or buy a 825 and a DWA-160 USB adapter (which is basically the same price as the aforementioned 855). I'm opting to buy the 855, since it has better reach then the 825, which could be important to reach the DAP 1522 placed in my cabinet (or outside at the back of the cabinet in the corner). Do you think this setup will work (and will play 1080p MKV's without hickups)?A 855 router placed just outside my appartment; 4 metres and two doors away; and my DAP 1522 connected to my PCH within a cabinet (or just outside the cabinet on the backside). - last question: I have a Seagate Free Agent pro 500 mb USB HD. Can i connect this USB HD to my DIR 855 and stream 1080p movies wirelessly without chopping?Or is there loss of speed when connecting it to my DIR 855? - Wired is not an option. My router is placed outside of the appartment where cables aren't allowed. Furthermore the skirting is already placed in the appartment (and there no chance i can remove the skirting to place cables without damaging it). And i don't want cables to be seen in the appartment. I hope you can find the time to answers my questions. |

RE: Wireless dongle recommendation
Hi
I have just bought my WN-100 Wireless USB Adapter and I have some problems. Problem 1. Transfer Rate is VERY LOW from my computer to my PCH. I have tried both copying using normal file transfer and by FTP. Problem 2. The PCH seems to loose it's connection very often. I have reached 1MB/s using FTP for a short time, then the connection is dropped. I have to reset the PCH to get it connected again. So, by the sound of problem 1 and 2 I would think of a poor connection strength, but according to my rounter (a D-Link Dir 365), it says that both my computer and the PCH has 100% signal strength. The things I have tried so for is. 1. Changed the position of the WN-100 from the back to the front USB of the PCH 2. Changed the WPA cipher type from "TKIP and AES" to just AES 3. Changed the Wireless Channel to a lot of different channels, I have also used Network Stumbler when trying to find the best channel I would be glad for any suggestions! Thanks Fredrik |

RE: Wireless dongle recommendation
The PCH Wireless dongle is close to useless im afraid....you are far better off getting some homeplugs or similar which give you the consistency of a wired connection and the convenience/tidyness of a wireless one....Belkin and Netgear do good products, search for 'Powerline'
S Gone but not forgotten: - PCH A110 PCH C200 PCH A200 + WD 1.5TB Caviar Green Internal + 3x WD 1.5TB CG Internals in ICYBOX enclosure + 1x WD 1TB Caviar Green Internal + 2x 1TB WD MyBook + 1x Samsung 1.5tb F2 Spinpoint |

Actually I have already returned the WM-100 and ordered a homeplug. I bought the Netgear XAVB101 200MBPS and I hope this one works as expected. /F |
