Internal HDD vs Network storage
I have bought a network media tank.
Now I have to buy storage.

What is better.
Bying an internal HDD for the network media tank device or buying storage for a stand-alone NAS drive connect to my router?

What are the adventags / disadvantages?

Many thanx!!!

RE: Internal HDD vs Network storage
Internal HDD and USB attached drives will always be faster and tend to be more reliable....streaming is obviously a bit neater and allows you to stream to multiple popcorns, say one in the bedroom and one in the living room. Also the drives remain 'useable' i.e. you can add films more easily as they are always 'attached' to your PC via the network....I have a PCH with 1tb internal and 2x 1tb external usb drives....I only add full drives to the PCH and YAMJ as I dont want to keep disconnecting and updating for each film...

RE: Internal HDD vs Network storage
One nice thing about having external HDDs is the ability to increase the size. If you use a box with a RAID or a Windows Home Server, you can always easily increase your capacity and have some measure of protection (redundancy) against failed drives.

Using an internal HDD is nice and fast, but if it dies, everything is lost. Also, in order to increase space, you would need to buy a bigger HDD and transfer all of you data. You could always use external USB drives to increase the available space, but then you won't be able to have a seamless jukebox.

Really, it's up to you and your needs. If you plan on loading up a lot of movies and increasing your collection over time, it would probably be better to start off with a NAS or WHS.

You don't have to install it to the internal HDD. You can install it on a Windows or Linux machine on the network and point it to the HDD, as long as the NMT apps are installed. It's not too painful but you have to set up SMB on the NMT, then go to another computer on the network and "find" the NMT HDD. You can map it as a network drive from Windows Explorer (user = "nmt", password = "1234"), then use YAMJ to set up its files on the HDD. I used "YAMJ GUI" for this. It enables you to to do the set up in a Windows browser, then writes the config file and a command file. I run the command file instead of YAMJ directly.

You will probably still find that some things don't work perfectly the first time. NFO files will solve most issues but there is plenty of help and info in the YAMJ forum.
