MoCA Ethernet over Coax
I just saw this on Engadget: http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/06/25/net...er-review/
If you've been disappointed with WiFi and powerline adapter performance, this solution provides reliable 100Mbps over your existing cableTV wiring. Newegg has them for $200 US for a pair which is a little expensive but probably cheaper than wiring your house with CAT-5. I've been using a similar product, Motorola NIM-100, for over a year and it's been 100% reliable and equivalent to a wired connection. You can often get the NIM-100s on ebay fairly cheap. They won't work on Satellite TV feeds because they use the same frequency range (1100 - 1300 MHz) or if you use amplified splitters because they're not bi-directional. Anyway, Just thought I'd let you all know about this technology to get an ethernet port close to your TV. Add a hub or a switch and you can connect multiple devices like your NMT, SlingBox, Game console, BluRay player or whatever. |

RE: MoCA Ethernet over Coax
i saw this too and thought it was a great idea but then i noticed its the same as a powerline, it only goes from A to B. Ive heard someone say that you can get 2 pairs (4 units) and they will all talk to each other but then it gets very expensive real fast. so UTP instalation looks very good compared to this.
Much cheaper solution if you know what your doing. 1 drop per room, chances are theres less than 6 rooms that actually need a network connection. either go at it with a staple gun or sheetrock cutter and a snake. http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdep...p_id=10234 http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdep...p_id=10517 http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdep...p_id=10513 http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdep...p_id=10514 PCH A-200 16GB USB -> HDMI -> Samsung LN46A650 | A200 -> Toslink -> Logitech Z-5500 (Harmony 700) PCH C-200 8GB USB -> HDMI -> Sharp LC46D64U (Harmony 550) Eversion/Whisper skin (custom MOD) + WHS V1 (15TB Q6600/4GB RAM ) -> Mediasonic HR82-SU3S2 (Backup) D-Link DNS 323 for sale |

RE: MoCA Ethernet over Coax
I have UTP to all my stuff in the house but I can see in some cases where these units could be handy. I have coax to every room (unused) that was installed when the house was built. In some homes it can be pretty hard to fish new wires. These could be handy and MUCH better then the power line units.

The difference between this and powerline is that it actually works. Full 100Mbps. Also as you add more units, they all connect to each other like a hub., A to B, A to C, B to C... Mine is a simple A to B, One in my office where the cable modem is and the other in the living room where I have a netgear switch feeding my PCH and Slingbox. Since I rent, I can't/wont install network wiring. But if I owned my home I world definitely wire it for GigE. |

Are you talking about HomePlug? It is certainly more than A to B. It has a host that acts as a switch and connects with all other HomePlug adapters via the powerline. I bought three Zyxel NBG-318S 3-in-1 wireless HomePlug AV routers for $36 each from AMAZON. I can have a reliable PHY bitrate above 90Mbps between all adapters. However, the overhead of Homeplug seems to be high. The TCP data rate is about only 25 Mbps. So with this speed, I can reliably stream all HD contents originated from broadcast networks (e.g. cable, OTA etc.) with the max bitrate below 20 Mbps. But I can not stream those BD contents that has max bitrate up to 50 Mbps via my HomePlug. One good thing about NBG-318S is that it is also a wireless router roaming control, you can get a very good 11b/g Wi-Fi coverage through the entire house at the same time when you set up the HomePlug network. |
