RE: Watchdog script to get rid of wireless (WiFi) disconnections
Hi hooijschuur,
Sorry I can't remember which package installed "/bin/nice" on my box. Maybe someone here knows ? Anyhow, the "nice" command is not mandatory. You can just remove the "/bin/nice -n-20" part, and it will work fine (albeit with normal instead of highest priority). |

Yes, as far as I know, my script will never prevent your NMT from shutting down.

RE: Watchdog script to get rid of wireless (WiFi) disconnections
Can I use this script for bring the wirless connection on after reboot/power failure?
I try it, but after modyfication I had my PH unstable (I couldn't connect throught telnet, connection was broken). I have used the script from post #1. I was trying to use the script from pos #11 but it is written about transmission (I am not using it, cTorrent). I need this script only for bring the connection on after reboot (after connection to wirless it is on for few days, no problem with loosing connection). Maybe some version3?

RE: Watchdog script to get rid of wireless (WiFi) disconnections
Hi Mar_1910,
No indeed the script as-is will not do what you want after a reboot, because when it starts it detects the network settings, and then attempts to preserve them as long as the box is running. In your case, after a reboot the network settings are incorrect and then the script is launched, so you need to modify the script so that it uses your own hardcoded correct network settings, instead of detecting them. I'm on vacation and writing this on my smartphone right now - maybe somebody here can help you with modifying the script for your purpose ? |

RE: Watchdog script to get rid of wireless (WiFi) disconnections
how does this script affect hdd spindowns? I presume the hdd will never spin down, correct?
I am running similar script to reboot my cable modem, but I use a cron job. I manage to keep my connection alive but at the cost of constantly spinning the hdd

RE: Watchdog script to get rid of wireless (WiFi) disconnections
This script by itself writes nothing to the disk, so it could run completely in page cache, without the HDD spinning up. But maybe some executable involved may write something to the syslog, so the spin up issue would be a matter of system configuration. Even if writes couldn't be prevented, one could still enable the Linux "laptop_mode" to dramatically increase time between spin-ups... Also, the directory/file targeted by the writes, could be moved to a USB key and symlinked...
I don't have the PCH handy, so these are just shots in the dark. |

RE: Watchdog script to get rid of wireless (WiFi) disconnections
This looks pretty good, I'll have to try it when I get back home.
The problem I am having is that FTP did not seem to be working when the power was turned off (light be red, rather than blue), could not find the HDX, ping it, or anything else (I have it set to wireless auto with a static path configured in my router). I am hoping this works better. I really don't want to have to turn on the HDX, establish a connection, run to the computer and ftp everything across before the connection dies every time. |
