nmt startup time
hi all,
Is it normal that the nmt takes ages to start? I don't restart it often, but when it locks sometimes, that's the only real choice. Then I have to wait a very long time. I mean, I haven't actually measured it, but I am now waiting after a restart and it's been 10 minutes and it is still loading. Any hints about this? Can it be made faster?
Thanks,

Jorge

RE: nmt startup time
10 minutes is definitely not normal. try stopping all the NMT applications except the ones you absolutely need and re-start

Well, I don't have that many nmt apps running, but I will try. At least I know what I am experiencing is not normal, I will try to find out why now.

Do you have any user apps installed? Like did you install librarcy?

RE: nmt startup time
Well a couple of reasons spring to mind:
NMT gets powered off during writing to disk so filesystem need to fix the corruption before it will mount the disk.
Remedy to powerdown use remote power button followed by the delete button

External USB drives formatted in NTFS?

PCH-A100/A210/C200/A400 500GB EXT3 HDD<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Onkyo TX-NR1010<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Panasonic TX-P46S10
13 NTFS USB drives on 3 hubs attached to the A300, 3 Seagate blackarmour NAS 3TB

The inability to setup and configure the NMT should not be disguised as a defect of the box

When you perform a reboot (pressing POWER then releasing, waiting 2 seconds, then pressing USB Eject) do you get the same long bootup time or not?

I do have CSI Gaya, telnetd and one theme installed. But I remember having this issue before installing CSI Gaya and the theme. I would have to try removing telnetd and see if it changes something. Do you think having telnetd could have a negative impact on startup time?

External drive is ext3 (I run linux on alll my PCs, so this is just convenient). You're right that many restarts are hard, i.e. I don't restart unless the pch locks or hangs. I will try restarting with the proposed method and report times. The external drive is 500 GB, for what that's worth. I guess running fsck would take some time on such hard drive. Again, I have to check restarting before it locks.

I will have to try, I don't have the pch next to me right now. As I said before, I ususally restart when the pch stops respondind to remote control, so not much chance of doing what you say. Would it be possible to shut the pch down correctly by means of telnet, assuming it still works?

Well, I do not have a BD-Rom drive, but I do have a sata hard drive (500 GB). I just did a test, the pch was on, so I pressed power + Delete (with pause in between). The pch shutdown itself. Afterwards I cycled the power and measured how long it took to show the menu: 9 min 30 sec.
I removed the drive and tested again: 45 sec

So the problem is caused by the internal hard drive. I'll look into the logs in the pch to see if there is any hint of the cause.

RE: nmt startup time
TelnetD couldn't have impact on boottime.

Power+eject or Delete works for me most the time when PCH becomes unresponsive to the remote.

Good you've narrowed it down to the drive give it some TLC in a linux box just to make sure there is no file corruption.

any funny stuff in the startup script, maybe? loading apps that are no longer there or broken.

RE: nmt startup time
I just fsck'ed the two partitions on the internal hard drive connecting to the USB slave port. I removed everything except my data (movies, music), and restarted the pch. Stll takes around 10 minutes to start. There should not be errors in the drive now! Why is it taking so long? Is there a possibility that something is wrong with the firmware, settings? Any ideas what else can I do?

Thanks,

Jorge

Is it possible the pch is running fsck or changing permissions on the drive? I can hear disk activity while I wait those 10 minutes. I *do* have a lot of stuff in that disk (around 300 GB between music, video, and some backups).

So telnetd isn't started yet during that time? Bummer. Dodgy

RE: nmt startup time
A little late on this one but I'm encountering the same issue.

I found out that my A100 seem to perform a lengthy file operation on the internal hard drive at bootup time (namely : chown -R nmt:nmt $SHAREROOT) which means that the pch seeks throughout EVERY files of the internal hard drive to change their ownership at EVERY boot.
I demonstrated by creating a file owned by root on a subdirectory of the internal drive, then rebooting to find out that the file now belonged to nmt.

I started a thread on the A100 BUGS subsection along with detailed explanations.
