Jukebox 101
I have a little over 3000 DVD that I am in the process of ripping to hard drive. After playing around with almost all of the Jukeboxes here I came to the conclusion that all of them would not meet my needs.

I decided what I needed was a way to Add/update/delete movies at will without the need to re-index my whole list every time I wanted to add a movie.

I also needed a way to add my movies in a simple and quick way. I decided to write my own interface for doing just these things.

I am a programmer in ASP.NET and I also am very good with MS-SQL server. I program for some of the largest interactive websites on the net today. You can call them social networking sites if you wish.

Here is what I came up with:

Full database including all movie details that can be found on websites like IMDB.

Full interactive interface that runs in HTML from the MNT and accesses a web server that runs my .NET pages that in turn uses my back-end MS-SQL database.

It has search/add/delete/modify movie right on the MNT. It will also support any network paths. It also supports episodes as box sets.

The .NET pages can perform full detailed screen scrape's from the IMDB to add movies to my database on the fly.

My search will allow you to enter any part of a movie name and it will only return those items that meet the criteria. It can also sort movies in many ways. It also supports genre search. The best part about all this is it does all this just using the remote. No keyboard is necessary.

The reason I bring this up is because now that my project is complete I may be able to provide this as a shared service on the net.. This way you will have access to your own login and your own movie database.

Not sure if anyone else is interested in this sort of thing but if you are please let me know and I can hook you up.

One more thing to note here is that nothing needs to be installed. It runs completely from the net and accesses your local or shared drives.

Where would be stored all data of my scanned movies?

It does sound a bit scary with your server having control over all media of a users files. With ill intentions a setup like this would be really harsh on the enduser. I would never dare to use it. Sounds suspisious from a security point of view.

It's like every client have a ftpserver where the server can download everything.

So, in a nut shell: You provide the library over the net, which has user based sub-libraries we can reach through our login.
What I don't see is how our media would be scanned or added to our own (sub)library. Or do we need to add the movies manually?

RE: Jukebox 101
You would add movies to your own library but all of your movies would reside locally. Meaning the database and the GUI is the only thing I would control.

I guess there are some untrusting people out there. Which I did expect but no worries.

Here is how it will work.

You will create an account on my webserver. You will then get a username and password to login to your own account.

Then you can add/remove/update/view and play movies from your own personal database on my server.

Your movies will all be on your own local system or a share that is available on your side. The GUI which is nothing more than a .NET page on my server is the only thing that I control. The way it will know where you movies are located will be by specifying your local path to play the movie.

The GUI will show all cover art much like the Just another jukebox does but you can search/add/update/delete movies right from your MNT.

I hope this clears it up for everyone but if you have any more questions please let me know.

Can we also set up a own webserver?

You bet. I can also supply the source code so if you have a webserver running IIS that will support ASP.NET you will be able to use your own webserver. You must also have your own copy of MS-SQL.

Now I would bet there are a lot of people that do not have this setup at home which is why I offered to simplify everything and offer my services to anyone that wants them.

This way there is ZERO setup other than pointing to a website and you will be on your way. I will also be able to expand on the service as well so if other people enter a movie that you have it will not need to scrape the info again if it is already in the database. So moving forward it would get better and better the more people use it.

RE: Jukebox 101
sounds very cool man... i'm even more interested now.

So where is the layout/display/skin controlled displayed? On your end? or client side?

In other words are you just providing the information and theres a file/skin that resides on the local machine to display the information? Or are you controlling that too?

The skin as you would call it is the ASP.NET page itself so I would control that. People would be able to upload skin graphics if they wanted other skins in addition to the ones I provide.

You would be also be able to custom tailor the interface to meet your needs if you wanted. Layout, Genre's, Search Criteria, Skins and what not.

As someone that has been writing social networking websites for over 10 years I am pretty good at adding new features on a regular basis and listening to my user base.

If you need a feature suggest it and if enough people agree I will certainly add it.

My purpose here is to simply see if there is enough interest for me to take the time and effort to set all this up for people. If we get a few hundred people I will go all out and do it up right.

I will post a link later tonight that will point to my example on-line so all can see exactly how this will work. Right now all my pages a local so I will need to put them onto my production server so that is why the delay.

No you would need to have a internet connection at all times you want to use it.
