RE: Music Player Daemon (MPD) 2009-10-01 Re-Release
Phew, this has to be the most confusing thread I have ever read...
I was directed to this thread from the 'official' MPD thread here: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...?tid=17306 Which has been edited so that you can't actually follow the install instructions any more due to the GPL licence being broken. IMHO that thread should be deleted as its just confusing. Right from the first sentence in the first post of THIS thread (last edited 4 months ago to say "[strike]There are no friendly instructions atm, sorry.[/strike]"), then the confusion starts in earnest: Quote:Edit: A Community Installer Package is now available for testing. If you decide to use the old (this) method, please clearly state that when reporting bugs Erm, which of the three methods is 'the old method'? - the one that is described in that thread or the one linked, or the one in the CSI? The Package in the CSI (mpd 20090222) clearly states: Quote:OLD VERSION, ONLY WORKS WITH USB SOUND DEVICE! Which would indicate that its no use to me...nor anyone else really...so perhaps that needs to be removed from the CSI too? I am left with the following questions: 1) Can somebody please build a wiki page (NOT another forum thread) with the most up-to-date installation method? This can then be updated as an when, and we all get the latest info. no confusion. If this exists in a forum thread somewhere, then its just a case of copy pasting the info somewhere useful and isn't a great deal of work. If and when I get this working, I'd be happy to contribute to this effort. If there is already a wiki page, then PLEASE link to it from the FIRST POST in the various threads. 2) Should I or should I not install from the CSI? It doesn't work for me, but is this expected as I dont have a 'external USB device'? 3) Should I in fact follow the third method at post 108 (http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...d=291534)? If so...why is the REAL method buried over 100 pages inside a thread???...this is misuse of a forum, PLEASE use a wiki instead!!!! I have tried this method as well, and its not working either, which maybe related to the fact that I have been taken down this tortuous route to get here and there is some 'legacy' crap hanging around from the previous attempts... So, when you do 1) please include 'How to start from scratch' - i.e. how to cleanly get rid of the other previous versions installed from following the various instructions on this forum. Sorry for the rant (and the essay), but I've been trying to get this done for a few weeks now and its infuriating. I do appreciate your work in getting this working at all, and I appreciate that syabas should really be supporting this themselves, as the PCH interface, and in particular its music handling is shockingly awful, and this helps make it reasonably useable, if only it was possible to install. I am reasonably familiar with Linux and installation etc, and I am TOTALLY confused, imagine what its like for Joe Average. Cheers Jim |
