You are free to make that choise offcource, but wouldent it be less frustrating spending a tenner on some small soho switch and getting stable operation ?
You dont need gigabit for media streaming anyways, the bandwith on 100mbit are enough for that.

I have a Dlink Gigabit Router, 3 8 Port Dlink Gigabit switches that the system uses and as long as I have the PH set to 10/100 it works fine. If I put it to auto I get the problem that is known. So leaving it at 10/100 solves my issue until the problem is fixed. The only disadvantage to this is file transfer to the PH which is slow, but I only send files to that drive for testing before putting them on the home server.
