A very confusing network issue - Please Help, I am losing my mind!!
I have had a working set up for a long while now, but yesterday it stopped.
I have a file server in the loft, and a small PC in the lounge that I use to manage the database. I have 2 NMTs that are displaying the following problem. I can see all the shares on the file server, but cannot access any of the files. Some of the shares open and display the sub folders and some do not. Others display the sub folders of other shares!! If I browse the shared folders from the lounge PC or wireless laptop I can view them all fine. The only change I made yesterday was to start using the Remote Desktop service on windows 7. What on earth is going on? |

It appears to me the permissions have been changed, quite possibly by the enbabling of the Remote Desktop service.
Or perhaps the Windows firewall has been enabled? You should probably revise how you are sharing the folders too. To make it more failsafe in the future, you should probably add a user ("NMT" or whatever you wish to call it) with a password and give this user permissions, instead of the default "Guest" user - if that's what you've setup right now. Then reboot your PC, update the share settings on your NMT's and off you go! Audio, video, disco - I hear, I see, I learn. Wiki. Wiki? Wiki! |

Thanks very much for the input.
Windows Firewall is definitely off, I have given full control permissions to "everyone" and "guest" in each of the shares. The problems remain. ![]() FYI, on of my 8 drives is accessible from the PCH. I have tried to work out why this drive is accessible but none of the others are, but so far I haven't come up with anything. |

Try refershing the permissions, it could be a security pollicy change triggered by the remote desktop setup.
If you have anonymous access for guests I wouldn't be surprsied at a change. A110 with 1TB Seagate, PC with 4TB share Onkyo 606, Celestion 5.1 speakers Samsung PS58B850 |

I tried turning off the shares and then re sharing them, but that hasn't had any effect.
![]() Is that what you meant by "refreshing the permissions" ? |

Yes.
Sorry, can't think of anything else at the moment. I have anonymous read access for guests enabled, it solved my problems for the media shares. A110 with 1TB Seagate, PC with 4TB share Onkyo 606, Celestion 5.1 speakers Samsung PS58B850 |

Anonymous read access?
How do I apply that? |

Use the Local Group Policy Editor, there are entries under Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->Security Options, I think you have to enable" Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users".

I have made that change after searching for answer.
Still nothing. I think I am going to do a fresh install of Win 7 on my file server. |

I jsut thought - you aren't trying to use the NMTs after closing a remote desktop session by any chance?
Security polices are for a user so if you disconnect from the remote desktop that will disable any user policies. A110 with 1TB Seagate, PC with 4TB share Onkyo 606, Celestion 5.1 speakers Samsung PS58B850 |

This is possible.
Should I leave the Remote desktop open? Why would one drive be available? Strangely now, the PCH cannot see any shares. It's about to go out the window! |

First, try with the remote desktop open and see what difference it makes.

Currently, no matter what I do, I am getting the "no content found on server" error.

RE: A very confusing network issue - Please Help, I am losing my mind!!
I've had a thought. When I started using Remote Desktop I had to create a password for the user on the file server (this is not something I have used before).
Perhaps I now need to find a place to put this password into the NMTs. |

RE: A very confusing network issue - Please Help, I am losing my mind!!
I have had a break through.
After checking and rechecking the share permissions for the hard drives I decided to look at those for the individual folders, and found that the Guest shares were all missing! Why would this have happen? After reinstating them, I now have a working system back on. Why, when I shared the root of a hard drive was that not enough for the NMT's ? |
