newbie question: can I use the PCH as a web server?

Hi,

I'm thinking of replacing a Mac I use with Front Row, Azureus, and the built in Apache/PHP with a PCH (200 series). I know I can do all the media stuff with the PCH, but can I use it as a regular web server for the my photo collection and other basic static and PHP content?

What httpd server does the PCH use, and how configurable is it? For example, can I configure virtual hosts on it?

Sounds like PHP is build in, but to be clear, can I use it with the web server for my own content? What version of PHP is installed?

I'm really excited about getting a PCH, so you help is greatly appreciated.

any old $50 PC running Linux will serve you better....

If just serving up small photos and static content, it does run an apache/php or you can install a lighttpd/php stack.
I dont use the php stuff but I think there are a fair few common libraries that are missing.
Similarly the built in http server has a few "defacto standard" modules missing.

If it's not mission critical or high performance, and just a simple bit of php, then I dont see any real issue with using the C200 for this. except the network stack/hardware doesnt seem to be great - but that mainly affects p2p.

From what ive seen, virtual hosts is supported (certainly multiple ports), and *I think* the 3rd party software installer (CSI) uses this feature, to publish different 3rd party apps at different urls.

I actually wouldn't mind installing a print server on mine. Instead of running around with a 5m usb extender cable

I got a networked Printer the markup for networked was 20euros.. now my kids can even print form their Netbook over WiFi...

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realize how cheap web hosting has become on the net. Less than $4/mo for basically a complete web server with unlimited storage. That is less than what I pay for the electricity to run my server now!

I'll just go with that and get me a C-200 :-)

I really should have done that with the last printer I bought. But I was in a hurry to get one! Regretting it now.
