Android based settop boxes
Wonder if anyone have seen this...

Android Based boxes!!

If this can be rolled in w/ PCH, that would be cool. I know MIPS is
making a lot of noise trying to port Android to MIPS platform (still far
away in comparison to ARM though)

Why? The next improved Sigma chip, 8646 http://www.hughsnews.ca/sigma-doubles-bl...nce-006245 does Android. I'd take an Android interface over flashlite for an STB any day.

I put some money aside, wait and see what comes Big Grin

@emveepee
I think the actual 8642/3 should do this too, just slower.

Yes but the extra hardware 3D together with the faster processor will make the it so much better.

Absolutely! I only wanted to say that it would/will work.

Quote:The SMP 8646 Blu-ray SoC and cost-effective architecture is software compatible with the Sigma SMP8642 and enables OEMs to easily design a family of different price/performance offerings. The combination of on-chip processor at 800 MHz and 256KB L2 cache yields an impressive increase in overall performance.

I have ported Android to the C-200, but it's a *CLOSED BETA* for now and I'm not going to give any further details until I decide to. Big Grin Tongue
I might release some teaser videos soon, but they won't reveal much, their only purpose is to generate lots of attention and praise for me.

RE: Android based settop boxes
Well Tux maybe you should seriously consider it.... I think with the Sigma toolkit it will stand a better chance than running XMBC on a C200....

RE: Android based settop boxes
the problem with closed sdk embedded boards is how you release the final product.. you can't release the sdk so nobody can compile it unless they get their own sdk which costs more money then setting up some nettops (and if history repeats, it won't be long until the average joe can't buy the android dev platform).. you need to pay a distribution fee so you can't just release a binary because you'll break the license to modify xbmc.. you almost need to cut a deal with xbmc to release a player running it and sell it..

RE: Android based settop boxes
I just wonder if the embedded board solution is really necessary or just Sigma protecting their Chip business and the DRM folks. The current Linux on he C200 runs on MIPS and Android also runs on MIPS and as I understand it Android is going back into the Linux fold as a branch.

RE: Android based settop boxes
MIPS don't do the porting, the semiconductor manufacturers do. It's happening one way or another but there is a conflict with the DRM that operators (Sky etc.) have in place to the market will still be split.
