Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
Hey all, hope this is the right forum section to ask this in.
I started by researching each NMT individually, but that has been long and ultimately not helpful. I currently own an egreat M34A (as well as a WD TV, non live) that I have connected to my network to play movies wirelessly. Only problem is that if a movie has subtitles, I've got to put the movie on a USB drive and play it from there, otherwise I get no subs. (This happens for sure on .mkv files, not sure if others as well) :-( Kind of defeats the purpose of having my NMT play from the network. So, assuming the M34A moves to the bedroom as a secondary NMT, which other NMT(s) support playing subs over the network? Any? I will gladly accept any and all suggestions as it's gotten to the point where it's becoming frustrating. For example, if I don't realize the movie has foreign language scenes that are subtitled and I've got to stop the movie halfway through and take several minutes to put it on a USB drive. Thanks in advance. |

RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
All NMT can play subs over the network.
The issues that may come along are: are the subs are embedded and what format the subs are. It may something to do with how you are renaming the subs and the filesystem being used.

RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
OK, fair enough. If I were to narrow it down to one movie, I'd say Avatar. I don't know too much about subs, but I'm guessing they're embedded since it's just an .MKV file and there is no .SRT file (or whatever it's called) that I've seen w/ other movies.
So pardon my ignorance, but how do I check the format and get them to play over the network? Also, is it easier w/ one NMT over another? I mean, if each movie requires some kind of processing that takes minutes or hours for each one, it still is a pain for movies that I don't realize until later that they have subs. Take 2012 for example. I'm sorry I watched it, but there were several foreign language scenes that I didn't realize were there from initially scanning throught the movie. Thanks. |

RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
In 2012 there are several sub track, there are English only for the non English parts and English for all dialoge through out the movie, the same with The Day The Earth Stood Still.
Now if you want to see whats inside the file, i suggest you download MediaINFO GUI and take a peek inside. http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...?tid=30318 It can help you troubleshoot if the NMT support the audio, video, subs, bitrate, etc. PCH A-200 16GB USB -> HDMI -> Samsung LN46A650 | A200 -> Toslink -> Logitech Z-5500 (Harmony 700) PCH C-200 8GB USB -> HDMI -> Sharp LC46D64U (Harmony 550) Eversion/Whisper skin (custom MOD) + WHS V1 (15TB Q6600/4GB RAM ) -> Mediasonic HR82-SU3S2 (Backup) D-Link DNS 323 for sale |

RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
AWESOME! Thank you.
![]() So yeah, in general I'm only interested in subs where there is a language other than english. I speak english and I am not hard of hearing, so in general I'm usually interested in the english track that only covers non-english scenes in movies....obviously very important in Avatar! ![]() So, 1. Now that I have this info, what do I do with it in order to get my subs to work? (2. Side question: I notice a menu/chapter structure at the end! Is this usable on my NMT over the network? I've never been presented with a menu structure. Will have to see what happens when I press Next Chapter next time I watch this movie) Thanks again! Code: GeneralEDIT: Well, since you've helped me identify that the problem is not that the M34A *DOESN'T* play subs, it's opened up some new searches for me. If anyone has any specific advice in order to get my subs to work, I'll take it. Otherwise, I've found another thread or two that I'll try to see where they lead. This one doesn't seem to have a final answer per se, but may lead me in the right direcion?: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...+subtitles |

RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
I have never seen so many subtitles in one MKV, and I have also never seen so many different types of subtitles in an MKV.
I'd love a sample for testing with beta firmwares, can you cut one with MKVMerge, it may also give error messages if it finds then during the split. Are the subtitles HR res or standard, only the 200 series will play HR PGS presently IIIRC. Chapters should work fine over network, are you using SMB or NFS as not sure but I think http may have some issues with some subtitles. RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
Hey Chris, I don't mind cutting you a sample, assuming I can figure out how. As you may have guessed, am a little bit of a newbie at this. But I'm a techy guy, so hopefully shouldn't be too hard to figure out. How big/long do you want the sample? How do I get it to you?
As for the subtitles, per my previous comment about my newbie status, I have no idea. I don't know what the difference is between standard and Hi-Res subs. As far as the english subs are concerned, they look like standard subs, nothing special. Text is a slightly pixelated if that is any indication. I'm playing my movies over the network using myiHome. Are you saying that I might have an issue w/ subs due to this? Should I be playing directly from my shared folder instead? Thanks. P.S. As I haven't read or figured out a better way as of yet, I am currently on a mission to strip out only the english subs, place them in a separate file, and see if those will play. |

RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
Holy crap, you got about 40 different subtitle tracks in there and a soup of formats. Oh i would love a sample too
![]() Ok looks like we have some stripping to do . Download MKVmerge GUI, Load the file, then check only the tracks you want to keep, should be the Video track, audio track, chapters, and the one subtitle track that you want. Choose an output file name then hit start muxing. Make sure that your not overwriting your original file so save it somewhere else. The process can take about less than 2 minutes. Now by reading your media info im not able to tell the difference between which english track is only the non english speaking parts, but i believe it could be track#3. I think the problem is that your NMT does not support multiple subs embedded within a video container while streaming from the network, the limit could be 1. RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
You can have many subtitle tracks and still stream via network.
I am currently running the Avatar backup though makeMV to see if it produces a similar number and type of subtitles. I'll post the Mediainfo results to compare against the reduced x264 MKV. The problems could be many. you could have high res subtitles which aren't implemented yet for none PGS subtitles. you could be having issues as some subtitles are meant for internal/embedded and other external, however all are embedded you could have SRT subtitles that are not ANSI you could have issues just because there is a limit to the number of subtitle tracks, like chapter names til the fix you could be having problems due to the chapters not being correct. What error messages did MKVMerge through up, they are usually pretty good at telling you the area of the problem. The MKVToolnix/MKVMerge site has a list of error codes. RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
I ran the original BD 1:1 rip through makeMKV and then Mediainfo:-
Code: GeneralI make that 22 different subtitles tracks! going to give it a try on the current beta to see if it will play fine, there are some subtitles bugs in the beta1 but we'll see. Going to keep it for beta testing for sme time in any case both in BDMV and MKV format. Notice how the ones ripped from the BD are all PGS. Whereas on the other rips they are a mish-mish of different types. None PGS ones will have to be low res to play presently and as said earlier SRT will need to be ANSI and not unicode. RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
Hey Chris and Specter, thanks for all the advice. I'm so glad to hear that this isn't just a really simple fix that I missed in my searches on the forum. I'm newbie-ish, but I try to do a good job of searching before I post.
I have been reading a bit on different formats of subs, and which are and are not supported in the M34A. As you've mentioned, tt seems that there are other things to consider, such as the type & number of subs embedded in the MKV. I'm happy to report that I remuxed the file after selecting only the 2 english tracks, and the subs work just fine! I have the full english subs, and the ones that just cover the non-english parts. I don't know if there's a definitive limit on the number or numbers of types of sub files that can be put in the .mkv container, but the are working over the network now! Thanks! (FYI, the sub for the Navi speech was "ASS - FORCED - [English]" There is one issue though, that I have not yet been able to figure out. ??? After reading several threads I am aware of the "bug" in many (all?) NMT players that you can not select the subtitles until the actual first line of spoken subtitle text. The only problem is that, as I said, I have both the FULL english subtitles, and the subs for the non-english parts. I can't start *EITHER* of them until the first line of Navi speak. After that, I can then choose either of the subs. Makes no sense, since if I wanted the full english subs I should have been able to select it after the first line of speech, no?! I don't need the full subs, but I should be able to select them, since they are there. As for the splitting of the file, I split it every 1800 seconds (1/2 hour) and wound up with 6 different files. No warnings, no errors. I get "mkvmerge finished with a return code of 0. Everything went fine." Hmm....sounds like it's not helpful. Anyhoo...lemme know how big/long of a sample each of you wants and how to get it to you. Just PM me. Thanks...I really appreciate all the help! |

RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
Glad to see everything went well.
Split by size, a 5MB - 10MB sample would be fine. As for enabling the subs you should be able to enable them as soon at the movie starts without waiting for dialogue. PCH A-200 16GB USB -> HDMI -> Samsung LN46A650 | A200 -> Toslink -> Logitech Z-5500 (Harmony 700) PCH C-200 8GB USB -> HDMI -> Sharp LC46D64U (Harmony 550) Eversion/Whisper skin (custom MOD) + WHS V1 (15TB Q6600/4GB RAM ) -> Mediasonic HR82-SU3S2 (Backup) D-Link DNS 323 for sale |

RE: Which (if any) NMTs allow playback of subs over network?
Actually a 50Mb cut would be better. With all those audio and subtitle tracks a 5Mb clip wouldn't give enough time to swop around between subtitles.
Glad it's sorted

(06-13-2010 08:12 PM)Specter Wrote: Glad to see everything went well. So, in THIS THREAD POST, it is mentioned that M34A specifically (and maybe others??) have the "bug" that you have to wait until the first line of dialogue before you can switch to that subtitle. I can verify that I can't switch to the Navi-speech until the first spoken line of Navi. What's still getting me is that I can't even switch to the FULL english subtitle track until the first line of Navi speak. Then, I can switch to EITHER of the two sub tracks and they work flawlessly. Hmmm... One solution brings other problems.I will try stripping the subs out and keeping them separate from the .mkv and see if that makes a diff. I haven't figured out how to do this yet....but I'll read up on it. |
