MKVToolnix4.1.x and Beyond - MKV header compression not supported correctly in PCH
For many that are seeing issues in playback with MKV files some may be caused by newer creations using MKVToolnix 4.1.x and beyond. These versions of MKVToolnix have implemented header compression by default and at least the Popcorn Hour A110 does not correctly support.

You can check the following post for more information:
http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtool...ompression

Latest MPC-HC and VLC players handle without issue.

To "correct" or make files playable on the Popcorn Hour you can use the latest MKVToolnix 4.2.0 but you must use the extra options for video and audio and set compression to none. This will create an MKV file that will play correctly on the Popcorn Hour.

RE: MKVToolnix4.1.x and Beyond - MKV header compression not supported correctly in PCH
so the a110 doesn't play? I know both 200 series units work fine. btw, I think it was a rather stupid move on their part to enable the compression by default, it takes 12% longer to mux a file for 0.006% less filesize.

I have not yet received my A-200 so can not say for certain. But have tried with many files on the A110 and if you do not turn off the compression manually with MKVToolnix 4.2.0 the files will not play correctly. Generally get a black screen or black screen with audio only depending on what file types are within the MKV container ...

That is good to know ... now if only the A200 would pass HD audio like the A110 ... :-(

That has what has been keeping me from getting ... the Popbox I received is just a mess right now but hope it will be much better in the long run.

And I agree that making the compression set to default is silly ... especially with the very small gain in actual file size.

On one other note ... if you use tsMuxer, which I use a lot as well...

tsMuxer does not correctly support MKV header compression either ...

RE: MKVToolnix4.1.x and Beyond - MKV header compression not supported correctly in PCH
So mkvmerge changing to compressed headers that now causes problems in the PS3, 100 series and tsmuxer & it is the players that have the problem?

Surely you should be saying why given the fact that remuxing now takes longer and the amount of space saved is negligible, and space is becoming cheaper each day, why has the option been set as default. I've asked the developer so we'll see as otherwise i'm a big convert to MKV from AVI and this sudden change to make files no longer playable in a lot of players worries me.

If it is possible to change the 100 series to support the compressed header then they will try to port it in, however in the meantime remux and complain to the mkvmerge guys for implementing as default a setting that is generally not supported in hardware players and some software.

Reading about this. I think this should be a sticky for now at least until the masses are well informed of it.

matroska put out a clean utility to fix up a variety of common mkv problems for players having mkv trouble.

all versions work, what changed is the defaults and you need to turn it off yourself for future version

As a follow up note, I received an A200 unit yesterday and have been testing. With all the latest firmware updates, I have found some file issues with the A200 as well when using the default settings with MKVToolnix 4.2.0.

Also recommend turning off the compression for all MKV use with version 4.2.0. It is a bit of a pain and can not be automated but it is problematic if used, results are fine if this is done. ... Just remember that you have to set compression to "none" for video and audio tracks. Have not tested the sub-titles, but would recommend for those as well to be safe. See no real advantages in having on by default in the first place ...

That is good news ... what about the A110?

The A110 is still a great unit and the only one that actually does everything needed to play back full BD with HD audio at the current time from the extracted files.

Hoping the latest firmware updates with the new Sigma SDK will be released soon and the A/C 200 units will finally do HD audio pass through as well.

Please don't forget the A110 because I have just bought since couple of weeks.
I would very sadly if you will not do a update to resolve the issue on A110.

Do you have an easy tutorial to re-mux such files turning off extra compression for all tracks?

keep me posted because my A110 is always on under guarantee, Perhaps, I could exchange with other one more compatible(because by luck for me, I bought it on a supermarket "MediaMark").

Thanks in advance

RE: MKVToolnix4.1.x and Beyond - MKV header compression not supported correctly in PCH
I found a temporary solution, and it's work for me on Windows 7 64 bit.
1) I downloaded MKVtoolnix http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtool...loads.html
2) instal
3) lauch "mkvmerge GUI"
4) Add the mkv file in the default path
5) go to Extra Option in the below tab.
6) set Compression = None
7) Put output file
8) Clck "Start Muxing"

It's work perfectly, it takes less 5 mn for file more 10 Gig

I found a link with a script to automatize that. http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?topic=6897.0

NB : the 1st solution(with mkclean) crashes during the processing.

how to dectect if the compression is none or set?
