A few beginner questions regarding Mac sharing
Hey guys-

I just got my A-110 today, and in preparation I've been reading up on the wiki and the forums.

My main issue is the wiki seems focused on the A-200.

I have macs in my house, and am trying to figure out how to share the information on there.

I have my main drive shared on a SMB share (running 10.6.3) and also via ps3 media server.

I feel like I've not been able to even get the PCH on the network correctly.

Can someone point me to a guide as to how to do that? I've tried doing manual IP and getting information off my router.

Also, is it recommended to install an internal HDD?

Thanks!
Charlie

How are you trying to access your SMB shares on the Mac? I found out that you have to use the username "Guest" with no password, in order to access public shares.

Well, right now I'm just trying to get the damned thing on the network. I have a wired connection to a DIR 655 dlink router, and I can't update the firmware or access anything under the web stuff.

I tried setting up manual IP, no luck.

I keep getting "request cannot be processed"
and i know the IP settings are correct, because I had to manually set up the IP stuff on my xbox 360 and i have all the same info, gateway, dns, subnet mask, different IP in the same range as the xbox.

How do you set up your IPs in your network, which device acts as the DHCP server? You also need to add a subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0 and IP 192.168.0.XXX, also to access the internet, you will need a router-ip in your PCH), if you set it up manually.
On your Mac, did you turn on File Sharing and Share Files and folders using SMB (Windows) under Options... (You also need to activate the user account in that box just below that and put in the password on your PCH, too. Guest, I just tested this, unfortunately does not work, unless you have that account activated on your Mac(s))?

where do i put the router IP?

and yes, i have SMB activated under my main and guest accounts.
i have the dlink act as the DHCP server.

everything just auto IPs except for the xbox. i have 2 ps3s, a mac pro, and 2 laptops that regularly connect with no issues.

Sorry, should have clarified that: the router IP is the Gateway, and in order to access your shares via the guest account, you need to activate the option Allow guests to connect to shared folders under System Preferences -> Accounts -> Guest Account.
And under .. -> Sharing -> File Sharing -> Options... at least the last option needs to be activated (no need to turn on your user account here).
However, the gateway is not really required for your local sharing to work. Only the IP and Subnet Mask
If all fails, get your Mac and your PCH, connect both directly and use manual IPs (e.g. 192.168.0.1 for your Mac and 192.168.0.2 for your PCH; Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on both).
If you set up your network with a DHCP server (usually routers do that automatically) then you shouldn't have issues with your IP settings.

RE: A few beginner questions regarding Mac sharing
ok, well i made some progress, it allowed me to connect to the desktop, but it can't find the media.

so if I log into my router at 192.168.0.1 that would be it's IP? or would it be the IP that the ISP provides, in order to get internet access?

thanks so much!

No, 192.168.0.1 is a class C IP and used for private networks only. Your public IP, that your ISP assigns to your router (externally) is this: http://checkip.dyndns.com/

If you connect to your router via 192.168.0.1, then that's the Gateway address you use. (May I ask which router you have?)

I have a D link d-655 N band wireless.

So under the setup, I would use what i want the a-110 IP to be under IP address
subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 according to my router
Gateway is 192.168.0.1
and my 1/2 DNS are from my router.

with that i should be able to update my firmware over the internet correct?

thanks. sorry to be a pain on something basic like this.

(Assuming you got a D-Link DIR-665) Ok, first what you should do is connect one of your Mac DIRECTLY via a LAN cable to your router:
Quote:Do NOT upgrade firmware on any D-Link product over a wireless connection.
Failure of the device may result. Use only hard-wired network connections.
Secondly, download the new firmware via your browser on one of your Macs (the one directly connected to your router) and save it to the desktop. Extract the .ZIP file and finally go to your firmware upgrade page (Tools/Firmware). Click on browse and select the extracted .BIN file from your desktop, click upload and wait.

ok, i will upgrade the router firmware.

also, i am manually downloading the new firmware for the a-110, about a year out of date.

i will check back when i have done that.

i meant the a-110 firmware, but yeah, couldn't hurt to upgrade the router as well.
