HOWTO: Windows 7 ext2/3 support - update?
Ok, since the original thread was moderator closed (because there is never a need to update a how-to, right)... I'm starting a new one.

So Windows 7 and EXT2/3 file systems.

The solution I have had working is using the EXT2IFS drivers. I've been able to successfully have the 'service start' automatically, and load my internally installed (via SATA) 2G EXT2 formatted hard drive to a drive letter [ Q: ] in Windows 7, in read-only mode (that's all I need to do in Windows, be able to get read access to the file system).

However, its Windows 7, so Microsoft's hair-brained mentality of "we won't provide any facilities for you to access what you want but put all sorts of security in the way to prevent 3rd party access from working smoothly" is, of course, driving me nuts.

I did the install just by running the installer as 'administrator'. Hurray. No 'driver signing' issues.

However the Windows 7 UAC asks... every single time I log in "Do you want this software to make changes to your system?" (referring to the EXT2 service that then mounts the EXT2 image to the file system and assigns a drive letter. I.E. Do you want "Suzhou ind. Park SchiSuan KeJi Co. Ltd to make changes"). Angry

So registering the certificates that come with the software with certmgr.exe don't resolve that issue. (it was worth a try).

Does anyone know of a way to tell windows to 'permanently approve [just THIS application] the rights to make changes to the system' ?

The login dialog always gives the option of tuning down the sensitivity of the UAC in general.. but I don't want to turn down or off the UAC alltogether.. just allow this one bit of software the rights to do its thing without having to click a friggen dialog box every time I log in.

secpol.msc gives some options to tweak the UAC behavior, but it seems the only options via that mechanism are to effectively turn off the UAC security for all applications running in admin mode.

RE: HOWTO: Windows 7 ext2/3 support - update?
Your post scares me. I'm finally in the process of building a new Win7 system (something, I really didn't want to do) but I'm being forced into, to use the newer hardware & software but still under Windows. I'm not a Windows fan to start with and I HATE roadblocks. I pay for the hardware. I pay for the software and I bloody well want to do with it as I want.

Will I regret this?

How is this a guide?

Ext2fsd has Windows Driver Signing, change to it and you can have UAC on. Personally UAC is a pain in the rear and something I never switch on.

How can you have had a thread closed when you only have one post?

RE: HOWTO: Windows 7 ext2/3 support - update?
It is a pain with windows 7 having no ext support. I need to have read/write access to my external drive. The only thing I have done to get this is to run vmware, Installed a lite version ox xp.Share my drives through my pc to the virtual xp. This way I copy my movies and run myliljukebox program to update my collection. Better than nothing I suppose.

RE: HOWTO: Windows 7 ext2/3 support - update?
The best way I found was to download and use Ubuntu 11.10 as a dual boot, it mounts and reads and writes ntfs drives on the fly and allows you to copy data from a ntfs drive to my formated ext3 drive, also I was get file transfer rate of about 19mps

Just got my C-200...
I formatted an NTFS drive in Windows7, coppied some media to it and slid it into the C-200 and I can read everything just fine. What's the advantage of ext2/3?

I did the same- the entire HDD is NTFS in 1 x 2TB partition. No problems transferring files between windoze systems and nmt.
You can even point the whole nmt apps to the ntfs partition (being displayed as SATA_DISK) Smile (I have the nmt apps installed on an USB stick).
