thinking of buying a C-200 as my first NMT, have some DTS Questions
I've been wanting to buy some form of stand-alone media player for some time. About a year ago i bought a PS3 for that purpose. Without going into too much detail, i think you all know why that was a BUST of an idea.

Anyway, the Popcorn Hour C-200 appears to do everything I want, which really consists of just putting files of varying formats on it, and having an easy interface for my kids to navigate.

But I do have to ask a question about DTS. I know that to play DTS files, you have to have a DTS capable sound system. For example, if i put a video file with DTS audio on my PS3, no sound plays.

Is this the same with a Popcorn hour C-200, or is there a way around this? I don't want to take all my DTS files and recode them to AC3, because one day i'm sure I will have a DTS surround sound system. It's just not today.

I guess what i'm hoping you to say is that the C-200 has a way to decode DTS in realtime... Am i hoping for too much?

the C200 will downmix to 2ch, you won't get any 5.1 sound just old fashioned stereo

All advice is supplied packaged by intellectual weight, and not by volume. Contents may settle slightly in transit.

ahh, i like that you use the term downmix. So it will actually mix the 5 channels to 2? not just cut out 3 of the channels?

yes, it'll downmix combining channels and play it 2 channels.. you also have the option for it to passthrough which requires a tv or avr that can decode it..

That's awesome. So when i get a DTS capable 5.1, i just need to change a setting.

Seems they thought of everything.

Yep, and if you get a receiver that has DTS-HD or TrueHD it will also passthrough that audio for the receiver to decode.

Make sure you get a receiver that does decode those new HD codecs as most now do.

HD Audio, be it DTS-HD or TrueHD is only available via HDMI as optical/coaxial cannot carry the bandwidth. So when using optical you will get DTS from DTS-HD and AC3 if the TrueHD track has an AC3 track interleaved.

Haven't research but I read coax generally has huge bandwidth , and the industry only moved away from it , because of lack of DRM?
