The other thing I also envy about realtek based players SDK is they provide a preview window in their list views. However until I see BD Profile 2.0 capability on Realtek based players, I'm staying put. RE: Possible Popcorn Hour killer?
As others have said, you only have to read their user's opinions on the company and you'll learn everything you need to know.
However, buying a media player isn't all about the flashy headline grabbing figures. There isn't a player out there that will ever not need an update to the firmware to fix an issue or a bug. Popcorn hour users complain if it's been 2 weeks since a new firwmware update for their device, heck my A100 even got one recently and that's been out of production for 2 years or more. Now ask in the forums of other device manufacturers when they last did a firmware update, and what about out of production units? That A100 may have been expensive relative to the market, but the return on investment has meant that it's cost me <50GBP per year so far without a problem. Syabas may not always be the most responsive of companies, but their support of their players is second to none in my opinion. They may not have Apple-esque levels of customer satisfaction, but they're the best the media player market has ATM. One thing Xstreamer do understand is bigger, better, faster. The tech blogs don't want to write about a firmware update that adds a bunch of small, incremental features. They want a shiny new device, bold claims, etc. because they are relatively superficial and won't be using that product day in-day out. I know where my next media player will come from. |

I believe Xtreamer pulls subtitles from opensubtitles.org. From having used that site "manually" in the past, I cannot say I'm very envious. The results will vary greatly.

RE: Possible Popcorn Hour killer?
Baaaaaaaa!!!!
I think a lot of people are still looking for the Holy Grail of media players and it does not exist. It may never exist because media types keep changing and being added to. A lot want the eye candy for their "stuff". Some want the most movie formats, music formats, picture formats. Some, expect everything. Think of anything else, you've purchased, does it do everything perfect? My guess, probably not. I really think, people focus in on key words, and most all else, falls to the side. They see "media player" and assume all media plays. Some spend more time looking at the device's "specs". They do a little better. The people that do the best, make a list of expectations for the device. Find a devices of their type, select a few devices with their specs and then look at forums, blogs (etc.) for people that expected (wanted) the same and received them. I'll pick on myself. I have music and pictures and it's nice the PCH will play/display them but my movies was my main purpose. Sure, I like eye candy for the jukeboxes but I would spend very little time looking at the "eye candy" vs the movie. The ability to play my movie "stuff" was my goal. The rest was just icing on the cake. So I say, before you go looking for your media player, pick the things that count most to you. DON'T look for the "do everything unit". You won't find it. I like my PCH units. Perfect - NOT, but pretty damn good. I have a $800 US video card in my hexacore hyperthreading Intel desktop. Yes, you can buy more expensive video card(s) but my desktop does not play my movies with better video/sound quality then my lowely C-200. Honestly, if you do not get, what you expect, then you never did the proper research vs your expectations. C-200, A-110 both playing from a DIY Linux Raid 5 server. Remuxes, Captures and Transcodes done on a desktop running; Win7, Intel i7 hexacore processor with 24 GB ram, WD VR OS drive and a WD Black 2 TB data drive. |
