Overlay drawing while playing video.
Hi,
Im wondering if its possible on PH to use DirectFB (or similar) to draw things on screen while video is being played. Means having 2 programs being running at the same time (the regular program for video decode/display) and another program both having access to the same frame buffer. Cheers! |

Possible yes, is this information available to yet no. If you run the DirectFB tool dfbinfo you will see several layers that would allow alpha channel type displays.
The bigger trouble is that mono the video playing app, doesn't even use DirectFB. Martin |

Alright,
I suspected that there would be some issue ![]() My idea was really to do offline rendering (think serverside when streaming a movie) of subtitles that supports ASS/SSA subtitles (I don't expect to get any support for this in the near feature on the native side) that way one wouldn't need to spend so much CPU time on the target as it would only receive a RLE compressed image and that should be quite fast to decompress. But this isn't something I have started to work on, it was just an idea really. Thanks for the reply. Cheers! |

I've been able to do something like that...
I've accidentally had success displaying GBPVR's menus while playing a video. Using a telnet session I started mvpmcx2 after I'd already started playing a video. The GBPVR menus rendered transparently on top of the already playing video. I didn't play with it much so I can't speak to the technical limitations but just being able to overlay sounds like it might be sufficient for your idea.

mvpmcx2 does use two OSD layers so I can see that happening, (if gaya isn't running which causes a seg fault) but I expect the same problems if HDMI is used that happens today when mvpmc2 gets the screen back while internet radio is playing with the --no-nmt-gui command line switch.
