Bye bye Popcorn Hour!
I got sick and tired of waiting for a better GUI for my PCH so I bought a Boxee instead, and I don't regret it for a second! The GUI for the PCH is pure shit! Having to use YAMJ to get a nice GUI is not acceptable. NMJ is unusable as it is today. Don't get we wrong, there are things that are fantastic with the PCH. It plays just about anything in great quality with a very nice graphical interface (during playback). In that way it is a bit better than the Boxee, but in all other ways it gets beaten hard. I do miss the internal HDD though, that's also a upside with my PCH-A200

It was a great ride, but I have moved on. Maybe we'll meet again in the future.

Thanks for a great forum, you are all great!

RE: Bye bye Popcorn Hour!
Why throw away great playback for a nice looking UI? its no secret boxee box still has trouble with playback of certain content was the UI worth the sacrifice of playback ability?

because he's a form over function person. they'd rather it look pretty for the 5% of the time that it's not playing content

People have the right to their own opinion and they dont necessarily have the same priorities as you guys do. So..the PCH do have great playback yeah but what good is that if the wife/family are having trouble with the UI? (just an example)

same example is turned around but worse. hard UI you have some trouble with or a good UI and the video dont work lol. Which one will make a wife more mad.

I don't need either to keep the wife happy.... But.....

I have found YAMJ a great way of making up for PCHs failings. Have you tried alternative GUIs ?

Samsung PS51d8000, Onkyo 509, Tannoy EFX5.1, Xbox 360, Popcornhour C200, Sky+HD, Wii, Harmony one

RE: Bye bye Popcorn Hour!
I haven't had any problems with a single file YET. I guess it will happen some day, but this far I am very satisfied.
I do find the GUI of a mediaplayer VERY essential. As it is today I sometimes download a bunch of movies after reading shortly about them on IMDB, but a couple of days/weeks later when I'm browsing through my movies I have no idea what that movie is about or even if it's a comedy, thriller or horror movie. My girfriend finds this VERY odd. Smile
The PCH would be the perfect machine with a better GUI and I just did not have the patience to wait any longer after all the promises about a great new GUI. NMJ v1 is not what i expected it to be and NMJ v2 seems to be very far away.

My next mediaplayer might very well be a PCH again. I've had a A-100 and a A-200 and especially the A-200 has been a good machine. With a better GUI in future releases I could very well think of buying a PCH when my new Boxee is a goner. Until then I am happy with the change, even though as you guys also say the PCH beats everything when it comes to file support and picture quality. Another thing that pushed me over the edge for the change was that my remote was giving up, it was aqueking everywhere in the plastic when i pushed a button and it missed every second push. The remote for the Boxee is RF instead of IR, and that is great, I also like the keyboard on the backside. It does miss all the other buttons from the PCH remote on the other side though which makes it a bit "powerless" compared to the PCH remote in some cases.

But to answer your questions above. YES I do find a nice GUI both for navigating the device and indexing my movies very important. Maybe not as important as the file support and picture quality, but the Boxee handles this well also, even if it doesn't handle it as well as the PCH.

The greatest thing with the PCH is this community though. It would never had been as great as it is without all of you. The community for the Boxee seems quite dead.

Thanks for the tip, but I have tried alternative GUI's. YAMJ is great and very customizable, but I would like to be able to use my mediaplayer without being depending on my computer (besides from downloading stuff and transferring it to the mediaplayer). But yes, I do think that YAMJ is the greatest thing that this community has created.

And that's what matters to you, then that's fine. If you don't care that it plays format X or format Y, then that's fine.

RE: Bye bye Popcorn Hour!
I am far from a computer expert and while YAMJ, the skins and mods, and the PCH look very complicated at first glance I have found them to be very easy for me to use. In fact in the last few days I have been messing around with some new mods and found it quite easy to switch between skins. It's easy to tweak things and get back to the old skin with just a quick change to the musicjukebox properites. I did consider Boxee but to be honest it concerned me that you could find so many on eBay...makes one wonder why so many people sell them. We have 4 PCHs, kids have them in their rooms....all run the Aeon wall and all are very easy to use.

If you needed a dynamic jukebox to keep up with your downloaded movies and to provide a plot of the film then Oversight would have got around this .. which although basic is very simple jukebox with a user friendly GUI.. Please tell me you checked it out before buying something else?

RE: Bye bye Popcorn Hour!
Not read every single reply here, but to be honest, I cannot understand how someone could perfer the boxee box over a PCH product. I use a A300 right now.

Before I used:
- TerraTec NOXON video thing (Realtec, do not remember the name)
- iXtreamer
- Boxee Box

All used within the last 4 month.

I have to say, that I am far (!) most satisfied with the PCH product. Not everything perfect, really awfull documentation, quite bad manufacturer support etc. ...

Boxee Box:

If you have so called Apps (at least in germany), which do not more than open a really slow and lame browser to "playback" mediasites (ARD, ZDF etc.) bothered me really.

The user interface may appeal to some people more beatifull, but for me it is to much to list all the "why the hell" uses cases with normal playback - my favorite one: stupid me was not able to start any file/app with one push of a button, EVERYTHING needs at least 2 most of the times 3 or more button presses ...

I am lucky for you, that you finally found the boxee Box which fits to your needs.

From my point of view, I have to disagree totally.

RE: Bye bye Popcorn Hour!
To some extent I agree with OP. I appreciate the aesthetics and functionality of a nice GUI.
Which was one of the reasons I was looking at Boxee, but they cannot run external 3TB HD's (Without a very annoying work-around) and being that I have 2 - It's not a suitable device. Also there are playback issues with Boxee which turned me away.

If OP thinks the GUI of the PCH is terrible he obviously has never used a Western Digital media player. Now that's a pretty hideous GUI for comparison sakes. Especially the cover art thumbs, which look as if some child finger painted in art class.

What's wrong with the NMJv2? I've seen it in YouTube videos and it looks pretty decent - plus the cover art is roughly 720p quality? What is there to complain about....

As per one of the comments above - Do I need to have the PCH connected to my PC to use Yamj/Eversion or do I just flash them onto the PCH A-300?

You have to run it on your pc to update your media collection.

Just the update part, once updated you don't need the pc until you want to update the media files again..

also keep in mind, nmjv2 is NOT yamj. nmjv2 is the built in jukebox

RE: Bye bye Popcorn Hour!
I've been a owner of all popcorn models. I bought a Boxee. Ended up selling it, and upgrading to a A300.

Boxee's UI is great. The best. NMJ is nothing compared to it.

I didn't like the way you did REW/FF on video files. No way to see something at 8x or 16x forwards of backwards, no way to jump to 20% or 70% of the video automatically.

But the main reason:

And I cannot stand the fact, that they will not let me do something as simple as 'delete' a file from the UI. Most of the time when I am done with a Movie or TV Episode, I delete it.

I keep having to use my computer to delete files every day, and keep track of what I saw the previos night.

They just said straight that such a feature will never be available. Not even as an 'advanced' option you had to turn on (it seems they don't want to be blamed in case you accidentally delete something).

So, having to use the Boxee, and my computer to do maintenance to my library was a hassle.

(My DroboFS has nzbget and Feedtime installed, and downloads most stuff automatically).

Also Boxee as a company leaves a lot to be desired and the Popcorn seems to have better quality.

Right now I have Boxee 1.5 on my Mac, if I wanted to use it...
