Developing for Apps Market - need a little info
I wanted to know what language Apps are developed in. I'm quite comfortable with HTML, Unix shell scripting, PHP, MySQL, Java etc. Is there a simple guide that details how apps need to be developed to fit into the market framework? Does the Apps Market run on other media servers as well as PCH?

Any info or links would be helpful.

Cheers Mike

The language is Flash.
At the top of every page (yes, this one too) you see a horizontal dark grey bar, where it says "[13. February 2012] App Template for easy App creation released". Click and you will find what you look for.

Thanks for the fast reply!

Sorry for not seeing the link - my poor mind can never make out any coherent structure in what's shown up there so I always just automatically skip the whole section up there - my bad.

I'll admit I haven't a clue regards Flash though I am often impressed by the end results produced. My application requires that I periodically download a file of data (0.5MB). This may then point to other files to download for caching. The main form I want to display is textual but the end result will be videos to play. I also need to provide searching and filtering depending on what the user has entered in the form.

I can easily do this in PHP or Unix shell but would the Apps Market & Flash be the way to go? should I look at MSP? or just try and integrate a PHP/Shell program into the system?

Mike

RE: Developing for Apps Market - need a little info
If you don't need an "on TV" interface, then you can make an app that has a Web interface. That way you don't have to learn Flash, but you would have to use a PC to access the UI.
Then it will not be an "App market" app, just a user application. The pch has a built in webserver which is used by some of the NMT apps, and using that may be the easiest way to get started.
There are forums about User Development for these kind of apps a bit further down on the first page of the forum. Look for "200 Series - Development and User Apps" if you have a '200.

If you do want an "on TV" interface then I think you could do a hybrid, with a php app doing the backend and using Flash for the UI. Most of the apps on the Apps Market are front ends to services found on the web.
However I'm not sure you can install the backend from the App Market, so you would require the users to install that in another way. This of course makes installing your app a lot harder, and you will loose the big benefit of the App Market, that it's very easy for anyone to use.

Many thanks for your prompt advice and help.

I'll need to have a think about whether it's worthwhile moving forwards.

RE: Developing for Apps Market - need a little info
flash is really close to javascript so shouldn't be too much learning curve there.. the sdk samples have classes to do the hard parts for you already made (and used by syabas).

For more works on other systems, a remotely served html5 application is probably the most portable and shortly would be an option on the 300s (and already an option on the v8) although the speed is not that great on these no gpu chipsets.
