trying to post
Have a bunch of code and a post with issues and 'sh' file results to post but forum keeps telling me first I could not post links (so removed them from the code portion), but now tells me I 'cannot add URLs into post or thread'.. there is not a single url anywhere.. is it getting confused over the path's in the files? If so how do I post this up?

RE: trying to post
the newer user restrictions recently added to help fight spam seem to have a lovely effect of getting in the way of new users wanting to post.. They do eventually go away with enough posts.

My recommendation is use something like pastebin and post without making it url form where on pastebin it is. Most of us here know the site and will be able to get to the post (and a mod might be able to edit it to add a real url)

RE: trying to post
It's to stop spam posts where bots signup and make 3 or 5 posts with url links to sites.

Make 5 posts and then on the sixth you'll be good to go.

In the meantime as suggested just post it and add a space or replace a couple of characters with xx. We'll fix it up if its not obvious.

I've tried adding xxx all over the place but eventually you lose all the path information for the directories you are trying to explain. There are absolutely no url refrences.. I even xxxx out the word 'com' if it appeared anywhere.. no go. I'd fix it if I knew what it was looking at and determining to be a url.. anyways. I'll just post a few times here.

actually I can't.. it just ads to my post as I was the last in thread.. hmmm.. fighting spam with the requirement to spam..

Stop being an arse no one asked you to post spam. Post useful posts or I'll just delete them!

RE: trying to post
I kind of side with this user.. This 5 post thing is awful and you did tell him to post more.. you can't help new users with paths because they thinks it's a url, people can't start threads right away asking for help so they wake up old unrelated threads..

users are already coming on frustrated because it's not easier to setup/use and then they have even more problems just posting for help. This solution isn't friendly to this communities needs and something better, even if it's change forum software is needed.

RE: trying to post
As you can see from his posts after his dig about making spam posts that he has more than enough questions about the unit to ask relevant questions, as do all new owners, without throwing toys out of his pram.

When you've spent hours of your time removing spam users day after day from both here and the WIKI then you may have a more rounded understanding of the problem. It also stops us posting helpful replies to other users by having to spend your time deleting spam from here and the WIKI.

Always open to other ways though so if you think you can get Werner to change the forum software then please ask him in the shoutbox when he's next around.

Added the 5 posts information to the forum rules/policy :-
http://www.networkedmediatank.com/announ...php?aid=25

Should stop a few questions especially if like a lot fo forums we introduce the requirement to read and understand the rules prior to access to the forum.

RE: trying to post
I was part of a forum that was so large, microsoft bought it. If the spam plugins aren't working out, then it would be worthwhile to re-evaluate forum and wiki software options.

Stopping people looking for help from making nice threads or posting what they need help with doesn't sounds like a good long term solution to spamming to me.

RE: trying to post
Nobody is stopping anyone posting. All can post, it is only in the first 5 posts that url's are not allowed. Personally although it maybe an annoyance there are far stricter forums requiring the likes of 20 posts etc.

If you can find a better way and then get Werner to change it then I'm all smiles.Smile

RE: trying to post
This one was started when he had one post.

It's just if they contain a URL and are in the first 5 posts that they are blocked as far as my understanding. I'll check though as it has been asked before.

Here is what has been said:-
Quote:Registered Users URL Limiter:
New Users who registered and are in the group Registered Users are not allowed to post URLs anymore, after they get moved into the group Members they will be allowed to posts URLs, normally i move users from the Registered User Group to the member group every 1-4 weeks, i think this should also help to make it harder for spammers.

So until Werner moves them into the registered as opposed to newbies user groups they cannot post URL's.
