PCH on Plamsa, I can play AVI but not MKV

I've had a PCH for months now and I've been primarily being using the PCH on a regular tube TV. And everything played except for DTS MKV files.

Now I've move the PCH from my Tube TV a 1080i plasma, and I can't get ANY mkv files to play. They buffer, then fade to black and then it goes back to the menu. But the AVI files play with no problem.

I've tried modifying resolution on the PCH to higher or lower settings and nothing and I've tried modifying the sound options, but still nothing.

Anyone have any suggestions???

Hi

It sounds as if you have a file that the PCH wont play. If you try and play ANY file after trying the file that wont play then ALL files dont play. You need to do a soft reboot (power wait 2 secs usb eject) and then files will play. Find the problem mkv and run it through mediainfo and post the results. Next firmware has a fix for this issue.

The fact that your TV is a plasma does not affect the PCH's ability to play files. Set your PCH to 720p60 whilst you sort out your files.

But the problem is when I had PCH hooked up to a tube TV via cheap a/v cables the PCH played the same mkv files I'm trying to play now.

Now I have the PCH running through HDMI via my Yamaha receiver and my receiver HDMI to my plasma. And its odd just the MKV files don't play now.

Can you hook the PCH to Plasma direct (temporarily) just to rule out the receiver?

along the same lines as this poster, if that doesn't work, try a set of component cables (or 1 composite). There may be some handshake problem, though it seems as if at least hte interface is showing up. You could have a bad HDMI cable. type of TV should mean anything. type of connection means a lot.

Hooked up the PCH directly to my plasma and MKV files played with no issues. Granted, DTS files had no sound.

So I assume its got to be something with my receiver then. Any ideas what?

Just an update: I just bought a digital coax cable and hooked it up to my receiver. And all works fine! I have my PCH hooked up to my receiver via the HDMI for video and digital coax for sound and all is good!!

So I assume the issue I was having had something to do with using the HDMI for video and sound.

Finally DTS and 1080i goodness!!

Nothing to do with HDMI. The cable cannot select to play avi but not some mkv files. The problem was that you have/had a mkv that the PCH dould not play and thereafter until a reboot ALL mkv files dont play.
DTS audio can be transferred via HDMI but only passed through to a device with a DTS decoder. Your TV doesnt have one so you have had to use coaxial as your amp doesnt have HDMI input.

I agree with what you are saying. But in reality, the same files that couldn't play under the HDMI video and audio only are the same files that could play now with HDMI video and coaxial audio.

Also my receiver is a Yamaha RX-V2700. So it has HDMI's ports and a DTS decoder. I'm thinking it had something to do with how I had my receiver settings since I can modify the ports the receiver looks for audio and video for that source.

But now that its working, I'm too lazy to investigate the issue and I have no problem with the 2 cable setup.

it could be the receiver, but it could also be one of the hdmi cables. only 1 going from PH to TV, but two needed to go from PH to receiver to TV.

if one of the cables is marginal, it might be able to handle lower bandwidth material, but not higher bandwdith stuff. you could have used the ok cable when you checked PH to TV. my guess would be the passthrough in the receiver, but it might be worth a quick check to see if the PH to TV works the same with either of the two cables you were using previously. (especially since new cable will be much cheaper than new receiver).
