Quality on the Sound and Movie Picture?
Hi all,

I just got my pre-order mail and I have a few days to think out if I will order the PH or not.

Anyways, what about the quality on the sound when playing mp3's and the quality on the picture when streaming divx/mkv's from the PC? How is the quality when playing movies in 1080p?

Many thanks //V

the video quality (1080p pc streaming) is fantastic. mkv with dts and dolby 5.1 ist possible. i dont know about dvd iso. but i think so.
mp3 i dont hear but is not a hifi unit. mp3 is also not a hifi format.

Thx

Video quality fantastic - its the same hardware that is used in several bluray players so picturequality is comparable to these.

DTS and DD51 will pass through to your AV receiver from all containers that include DTS or DD51 audiotrack - that includes .mkv, .avi, dvd-iso etc. etc.

Note that the PH does not have DTS decoding onboard - meaning you wont be able to decode DTS and send it as analog stereo directly to your TV for instance. To hear DTS sound you will need an external AV receiver that can decode DTS

Note also that dvd-iso is only playable from sources that allow direct file access, that is sources like internal harddrive, usb harddrive, smb or nfs networkshare. The included streaming server MyIhome that you can run on your PC to stream media is a HTTP server, and dvd-iso parsing is not possible with normal HTTP protocol/commands.

But there are developers in this forum working on other streaming sollutions that may include dvd-iso parsing in the future.

Regarding mp3 audio quality - it really mostly depends on your amplifier/speaker sollution - but as stated mp3 is not a hifi format thus talking about audioquality is a litle silly from a hifi point of view, and the unit is not a HiFi product for audifiles per say, it does not incorporate expensive hifi D/A converters, but I'd say mp3 audioquality is as good as on any other mp3 player you could think off hooking up to your amplifier.

Spawn-

Can you compare the video quality compared to streaming an HD file to a game console (ex. PS3 or XBOX360)

thanks

I can tell you it looks 10x better than the PS3 or 360 just because it upconverts all the way up to 1080P even for the DVD .iso's. Go HDMI if you can because I ran into some Aspect ratio problems using Components. Try both you'll see.

Very good, when compared to Lim, BUT, nmt has no brightness control and is a hint dark.

Quite interesting, if you pause a letterboxed video, the area where video is displayed has a filter over it, which usually cuts the pause icon in half. The top half is very nice and bright, the bottom half is filtered and darker.

But hopefully we will get brightness control soon, the sigma chip has the feature, they just didn't implement it.

Yes it has brightness control when you start a movie press the "Setup" button and you can control brightness and 3 others. and on your letterboxed video I don't notice that, what type of video cables are you using?

I do not get this behavior. If I start a movie and then press the Setup button the movie is stopped and I am taken to the set up menu's. Using most current firmware.

hmm maybe you found a bug?..i never tried to change the brighness etc..
but i saw that when trying that on a mkv movie it don't work...but on a *.iso movie the setup button works!...you can then adjust brightness, contrast, saturation etc...

You'll find it works on no movie, only ISO playback.
