Where can I buy a NMT Popcorn Hour?
You may sign up at Popcorn Hour and wait for a pre-order email sent to you when your turn comes.
You can also find many resellers
Do I get a confirmation email after signing up at the Popcorn Hour website?
No, you will not recieve any confirmation email. The only email you will recieve is a pre-order notification from popcorn hour.
Why do I need an NMT?
There are several reasons why you need an NMT. If you have a large media collection and would like to view it on your plasma/projector/home theater system. This is one of the most cost-effective ways to avoid investing in a HTPC. You can stream music, pictures and most importantly videos. The NMT supports H.264 video which is a compliant 1080p HiDef codec used by Bluray and HD-DVD. The second generation of NMT players with HDMIv1.3 support HD audio codec passthrough.
What do I need in order to play back from an NMT?
There are several streaming options available for play back.
1) Install Myihome provided by Syabas - http://www.networkedmediatank.com/download/myihome.html
2) Install Llink provided by Lundman - http://www.lundman.net/wiki/index.php/Llink
3) Connect to your PC via NFS / SMB network connection.
4) Connect to your NAS via NFS / SMB / UPNP AV.
5) Install an internal HDD/external HDD.
6) Hook up an external DVD ROM (for non-css encrypted DVD only)
How do I connect my NMT (Popcorn Hour) to my home theater system?
1) You need to have a coaxial cable and plug it into any of the coaxial inputs of your AVR (Audio Video Receiver). Make sure that your A-100 is setup to output as Digital PCM for whatever audio codec. For example, AC3 needs to be setup to Digital PCM for your AVR to detect as AC3 signal.
2) The A-100 supports an HDMI connection as well, if your AVR supports HDMI, you can connect to it directly.
3) There is a 2 channel RCA stereo output available for your 2 channel amp or simply hook it up to your TV.
4) The A110 has an optical as opposed to a coaxial connection. The A110 can passthrough HD audio codecs via HDMIv1.3 to a suitable AVR.
Do I need to install an internal hard disk in order to use my NMT?
1) No, you can stream movies/music/pictures from your PC or NAS (network attached storage).
2) You can attach an external USB storage device which contains the media.
Network Performance and Support
What are the supported file system for NMT?
File system read supported: EXT2/3, NTFS, FAT16/32, HFS+
File system write supported: EXT2/3, FAT16/32. NTFS write (not supported and low priority in to do list)
How should I configure the network for my NMT?
Under current firmware releases you really should only use "manual IP" mode and not "automatic".
There is a bug where the NMT doesn't correctly store your network's supplied DNS (domain name server) IP addresses and so the internet services (Media service portal, saya TV, youtube, etc.) will probably NOT work correctly if you don't enter your own "manual IP" settings.
From main screen choose setup -> network -> mode...change to "manual IP"...click on [save].
Next choose [configure IP] button and check the IP numbers in each field. For the two DNS fields you should use either the DNS IPs supplied by your ISP (Internet service provider) or the internal IP address of your home router.
What type of network sharing does the NMT built-in NAS support?
SMB, FTP, NFS
What streaming speeds should I expect from the various network connection methods?
SMB: ~38Mbps NFS: ~33Mbps HTTP: ~42Mbps (same clip peaks at 47Mbps) USB HDD: ~ 42Mbps USB DVDROM (8x): ~42Mbps Internal HDD: ~42Mbps
What is the best network connection for playing back high bitrate content?
Looking at the above chart, HTTP will be the preferred method for streaming. However, HTTP protocol does not support .iso/.ifo format at the moment. The next best choice is SMB/NFS.
Why can't I view my DVD .iso file using MyiHome?
Myihome does not support DVD playback. Please use SMB/NFS for playback instead.
I am experiencing video/audio dropouts when playing some high bit rate contents.
1) Try using an SMB/HTTP connection. They are the streaming protocols that offer the highest streaming speed.
2) Make sure that you do not have a problem with your network connection. If you are using WIFI, try switching to a wired connection as WiFi is not sufficient for high bitrate HD files.
How do I add SMB/NFS shares?
1) Setup SMB share: Goto Setup->Media Server->Network Share, you can browse your SMB network and add the path to the list, or manually enter the path to your SMB share, e.g. smb://<hostname or ipaddr>/foldername
2) Setup NFS share: Goto Setup->Media Server->Network Share, type in the full path to your NFS share, e.g. nfs://<hostname or ipaddr>:/foldername (note the colon after hostname
With firmware 01-15-080330-14-POP-402 or newer you can select the protocol (TCP or UDP) used for the NFS connection:
* "nfs://" = udp * "nfs-tcp://" = tcp
Some firewalls, including the WinXP firewall, will block critical parts of udp NFS server connections, even if correctly configured. If you experience a "No content found" error when using udp, try switching to tcp.
How do I get NFS/SMB/UPNP AV Server functions from the NMT?
You need to install an internal HDD and the NMT apps in order to get the following servers:
1. SMB server 2. NFS server 3. UPnP AV server 4. myiHome server 5. FTP server 6. Torrent downloader 7. Usenet downloader
The default username/password for remote access and FTP is:
username:ftpuser password:1234.
The default username/password for SMB access is:
username:nmt password:1234
the share name is share
(prior to firmware 01-15-080330-14-POP-402 any user name with a blank password worked)
For NFS, the hard drive is exported under the following path:
/opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/HARD_DISK
Since firmware 01-17-080822-15-POP-402 (maybe before) this is exported via the symbolic link
/share
which points to the same location.
BitTorrent client
How do I use the Transmission client?
Transmission is the alternative BitTorrent client on your NMT. It listens on port 8077. The port used for incoming connections is by default: 51413. You can change this in your NMT's settings, or in the preferences in the web interface (Clutch). This client is accepted by most private trackers.
To enter the Transmission / clutch interface, go to :
http://IP-OF-YOUR-NMT:8077
Example:
http://192.168.1.150:8077
The client will by default download to "/share/Download". This can be changed in the clients web interface. At the bottom of your web interface, there is a picture of a cog wheel. Click this and a screen with Preferences will pop up.
To download to external drives, simply replace "/share/Download" with your prefered external drive.
Example:
If you want to download to "USB_DRIVE_A-1", simply enter "/USB_DRIVE_A-1/" in the downloads field.
Problems known at the moment:
1. Slow download/upload compared to for example uTorrent
2. Can't use some private trackers
3. No DHT
4. Many features not editable; numbers of connections, individual download/upload speed etc.
The easiest way to control Clutch is by the Firefox Add-on that you can find here:

How do I use the BPTD client ?
BPTD is the elder BitTorrent client available on your NMT. It listens on port 8883. The port used for incoming connections is by default: 8881. You can change this in your NMT's settings. (This client is banned on many private trackers because of incorrect transfer statistics.)
To enter the BPTD interface, go to:
http://IP-OF-YOUR-NMT:8883/torrent/bt.cgi
Example:
http://192.168.1.150:8883/torrent/bt.cgi
Torrentwatch - Automatic downloading by RSS
Torrentwatch is a script written by journey4712 (creed to more people?) which is designed to help you fetch torrents of TV shows from RSS feeds over the net. It will still work for other rss feeds, tv shows are just the focus. The script also supports a watch folder to make it easier to add torrents to your PCH from anywhere that you have ftp, smb, or nfs access to your Networked Media Tank.
Google Code: Torrent Watch for latest release
Problems known at the moment:
1. No distinguishing between files being downloaded and finished downloads (maybe a Clutch problem, not moving the files from the download directory?)
2. No possibility to change the update time to less than once every hour

NMT Hardware Questions (Popcorn Hour A-100)
Help, my popcorn will not start after resetting to factory default!
The popcorn has resetted to default video resolution that may not be compatible with you display. Use the following shortcut keys to get back display.
!!!PLEASE WAIT TWO SECONDS BETWEEN PRESSING THE KEYS!!! - TV Mode + 0 = Auto TV mode (Please use it only for FAILSAFE) - TV Mode + 1 = Composite NTSC 480i - TV Mode + 2 = Composite PAL 576i - TV Mode + 3 = reserved - TV Mode + 4 = Component 720p60 - TV Mode + 5 = Component 1080i60 - TV Mode + 6 = Component 1080p60 - TV Mode + 7 = HDMI 720p60 - TV Mode + 8 = HDMI 1080i60 - TV Mode + 9 = HDMI 1080p60 - TV Mode + Caps/Num = Toggles between 50/60 Hz
How do i reset to factory default?
Setup -> Maintenance -> reset factory default
***Note this is the only way to revert back to defaults. The reset pin introduced in A110 only reboots (power cycles)
your A110. Also Power, wait 2 sec, then press eject, will do the same as pressing the reset button in front of the
A110
How do I fully shutdown the player when there is no power-off button?
There is no power button on either the A100 or the A110, but you can use your remote to turn them off.
Press 'Power' once and release it, then wait 2 secs and press 'Delete'
To turn on the A100 after complete shutdown you will need to unplug and then plug in the power cable. The A110 can be restarted by pressing the reset button.
Using the switched power outlet on some receivers and audio power amplifiers or a power strip is another option. The X10 powerline controllers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X10_%28industry_standard%29) are cheap and supported with IR and radio remote controllers.
How do I reset the player?
You can use your remote to perform a reset instead of unplugging and re-plugging the power cord.
Press 'Power' and release it, wait 2 secs, then press and release 'Eject'
FYI: Soft reset (reboot) via remote is the same on A-110 as on A-100
On the Remote, press and release 'Power', wait 2 secs, then press and release 'Eject' button.
Besides this the A-110 has a small reset (reboot) button on the front. When the A-110 is running, you reset (reboot) the device by pressing this button 1-2 sec until the device reboots.
Note - its not a "reset" button as in resetting any settings to default like your router may have (use factory reset in Maintenance for that feature), its just a reboot button to perform a power cycle without having to pull the power lead. For instance to power cycle the device if it for some reason has locked up during playback and are not responding to the remote, or has some memory/process lock from playing back a problem file.
There's no meaning of a "reboot" function on a device turned off - therefore no "do you hold it down and apply power, how long after you apply power?." situation. There's no reason to perform a reboot after you have applied power, because if the power has been of it has already performed the same action of being power cycled.
Can I plug in an external DVD rom?
Yes you can, the USB port can support an external DVD rom. However, the sigma 8635 chip does not support CSS encryption. Your DVD must not be CSS protected.
Can I eject the external DVD rom by using the remote?
Yes, there is an eject button on the remote.
Can an external USB HDD function like an internal HDD?
A USB HDD will not have same functionality as an internal drive. An internal drive is considered a non-removable drive that allows NMT apps to mount, but a USB HDD is considered a removable drive so the NMT is not able to dynamically mount and unmount the NMT apps.
What are the TV-mode shortcut keys command?
!!!PRESS&RELEASE 'TVMode', WAIT TWO SECONDS, PRESS THE NUMBER KEY!!!
- 'TVMode' wait '0' = Auto TV mode (Please use it only for FAILSAFE) - 'TVMode' wait '1' = Composite NTSC 480i - 'TVMode' wait '2' = Composite PAL 576i - 'TVMode' wait '3' = reserved - 'TVMode' wait '4' = Component 720p60 - 'TVMode' wait '5' = Component 1080i60 - 'TVMode' wait '6' = Component 1080p60 - 'TVMode' wait '7' = HDMI 720p60 - 'TVMode' wait '8' = HDMI 1080i60 - 'TVMode' wait '9' = HDMI 1080p60 - 'TVMode' wait 'Caps/Num' = Toggles between 50/60 Hz, can be used in browser
After getting out of standby, there is no video signal.
This is caused by the Video output mode being changed using the TV mode key and then not being saved to flash. - Workaround: Goto Setup->Audio / Video, and do a save.
There is no video signal detected with HDMI connection during initial setup.
Workaround steps: 1. Connect your NMT to the Composite input of your TV 2. Boot up and you should see first boot up logo 3. Wait until the screen goes blank 4. Press TV Mode, release, wait 2 seconds, and press 1 for NTSC or 2 for PAL 5. If you see the color menu in Composite try to set the HDMI output at Setup -> Audio/Video and do a save. 6. Connect your NMT to an HDMI input of your TV. 7. Power up NMT

Can you access A100 or A110 internal Hard drive by computer's USB after formatting it via NMT EXT2 or EXT3?
You need to install the EXT2 / EXT3 drivers on your pc.
1) Install this program and it works fine.
You need to go to the control panel on your PC and open the IFS drives item. You will then see the internal drive, with three partitions. If you give the third partition (should be the biggest) a drive letter from the drop down list, when you close you should be able to access the internal drive via the USB connection as if it were just another USB drive.
Have any Macintosh NMT users put any information in a WIKI?
Yes you can find some extra Macintosh information here
NMT Firmware Update
Suggested preparation for firmware update
It is recommended to do a fresh boot up of the NMT when intending to update your firmware. This will help the device stay "clean" and prepare itself for the update.
Where can I download the NMT firmware update?
NMT releases a generic firmware for all NMT players that have signed up under the NMT program. You need to visit your manufacturer's support page for their release.

Help, my video files are not playing? Is this a bug or faulty NMT?
Not all video files are encoded to work with the NMT, depending on the encoding of the media. You should use Mediainfo or Avinaptic to check. Being able to play on your PC does not necessarily mean that the NMT will be able to play back the same file flawlessly. If you need help, post the clip info in the NMT forum for advice.
How do I select different audio tracks for my AVI file?
Select your track, then use Time Seek to activate the changes
Does the NMT support subtitles?
Yes, currently the NMT support subtitles in the following format.
SRT SMI SUB SSA
You need to rename the subtitle file to be the same name as your movie and place it in the same folder.
Does the NMT support subtitle languages other than English?
Currently the NMT provides support for simplified Chinese, and some other European languages.
Why doesn't my subtitle display?
Please make sure that it is in the format that NMT supports.
The subtitle file must be in the same folder as the movie file.
The name of the subtitle file must be the exact same as the name of the movie except for the extension.
Subtitle language (Setup>Preferences>Subtitle language) must be set to anything but None. Remember to save the setting.
Does the NMT support embedded subtitles in mkv?
Yes! It is supported with firmware 00-15-071213-14-POP-402 update
1. Ensure that the embedded subtitles are supported by NMT, for example: .srt, .sub, .smi and .ssa
2. Turn on a subtitle by pressing "subtitle" button on the remote control
3. To select a different language after pressing "subtitle", use the "Right" and "Left" keys to scroll and toggle.
4. To turn OFF embedded subtitles press 'subtitle' followed by "Right" or "Left" key until selected "Off".
5. "Up" & "Down" scrolls through and allows to change different settings of the subtitle:
- 1. Colour setting, - 2. Time delay (+ and -), - 3. Font size, - 4. Shift in vertical direction.
How do I back up my DVD so that it can be played back by the NMT?
1. You need to backup your DVD into .iso format. A guide on how to create an ISO can be found here
2. You must press 'Enter' not 'play' on an ISO or IMG file.
3. DVD support in .iso is only supported via NFS/SMB connection at this time. It will not work with Myihome. If you are having judder or audio drop out problems with SMB share. Use NFS instead.
Why can't I view my DVD .iso file using MyiHome?
Currently MyIhome does not support DVD playback. Please use SMB/NFS for playback instead.
My movies are encoded with .DTS . Why is there no sound?
Currently the a-100 passes through DTS signal via coaxial or HDMI to your AVR (Audio Video Reciever) for decoding. It will not down mix to stereo due to license cost. You can get a cheap DTS decoder or re-encode the movie to ac3 which is supported by decoding to PCM.

After pressing the zoom button, the OSD does not go away by itself.
A possible work around is to hit the "enter" button on the remote to remove the OSD manually.
DTS audio keeps dropping out or stutters during playback.
This can be resolve by remuxing the .mkv file with gdsmux found in haali media splitter.
This can also be resolved by using DelayCut if the above does not work. DelayCut is incorporated in Heartwave's AudioConverter select the clean DTS option.
How do I get rid of the Popcorn Hour Buffering message when watching movies?
Usually it will fade away within 3~4sec, if it does not, you can press "info" 3-4 times on the remote to get rid of it.
How do I use playlist files via myiHome?
Make sure "Scan Windows Media Player/Winamp playlist" is selected under Edit>Preferences>Music. Then browse to your myiHome share or watch folder on the PCH. Directories and all playlist files except for .pls files will be listed first in alphabetic order, followed by audio files and .pls files in alphabetic order. Note that .pls files are considered Internet Radio links and are best suited for this task.
When I play DTS wav files, I hear only noise
The files have to have *.wav (not *.dts) extension. Make sure your receiver can decode DTS audio, that PCH is connected to the receiver via a digital (coax or optical) cable, and that you set the PCH Audio Setup options the following way: "Surround=5.1", "DTS=RAW". If you still hear noise, then your PCH "digital volume" (set via the remote) is probably not at its default value - try changing it as the DTS file is playing; once you hit the default level, you should hear the music playing.
How do I play all the files in the same folder?
Press PLAY to play all files in the folder. Pressing ENTER will play only the single file highlighted. To exit play mode, press STOP. Other keys don't work (yet). If you are using myihome, you can slect the "Shuffle" option in the left upper corner on your TV to play the whole content of the current folder (including all the subfolders) in random order.
DTS-HD/TrueHD .m2ts play back on the A-110/B-110
In order to play .m2ts files with the HD codecs you need to rip the audio for different formats the following way below:
- LPCM audio - mux in a 'dummy' AC3 audio track with TSmuxer (I usually do the Directory commentary here.)
- DTS-HD - remux with TSmuxer
- TrueHD - remux with TSremux
Photo playback
How do I view photos?
To show a photo, browse to the photo and press ENTER.
How do I view a slideshow of my photos?
For slideshow of all content of the directory, browse to the directory you want to show, then press PLAY. To exit the slideshow, press STOP. Other buttons don't work in slideshow (yet).
Are there any settings or previews available for my photos?
There's no preview available. The only thing you can setup is transition type and slideshow interval. To do so, go to SETUP, then to PREFERENCES.
Media Service Portal/Web Services
What exactly is a MSP Plugin?
MSP plugin is a small module to interface with RSS feeds or web services API. By using MSP plugin, you can create customize skin or GUI (Graphical User Interface) that render properly in NMT browser.
What type of content or source is suitable for MSP Plugin?
MP4 video with H.264/MPEG4 codec Shoutcast MP3 Internet Radio JPEG photos from photos web service Video or Audio Podcast RSS news feeds (text)
I am trying to create a RSS feeds MSP plugin but its not working!
The RSS feeds must contain a links to a .mov or .mp4 video, it will not work if it provides an external link. For example, http://feeds.ziffdavis.com/ziffdavis/dltvh264video
I am not familiar with JSP/JSTL language, can i use a static HTML or PHP/ASP script instead?
Yes, you can. If you do not wish to host the plugin in tomcat server. You can design your own static HTML page or using PHP/ASP script and host it in your own web server. You need to however follow the NMT browser specification in order to be compliant.
If i do not have a webserver, can Syabas/NMT host my plugin for me?
In order for Syabas to host your plugin in their tomcat server, you need to follow the MSP SDK in order for Syabas to integrate into their plugin servers.
What is the benefit of using MSP SDK instead of creating my own plugin using static HTML?
MSP SDK is good for JSTL or JSP programmer as a lot of interface to RSS feed and some UI element has already been coded and you can modify the sample code to quickly create new UI for your feeds
How can i add mms links from the internet?
MMS or ' Microsoft Media Server ' protocol is Microsoft's proprietary network streaming protocol. Its designed for playback on windows based devices with windows media installed. It doesn't work on small linuxbased devices like the A-100.
How do I add my own URL for live streaming via the web services?
This is a workaround solution
Create any file with an html extension with the following content on a share or a local drive and navigate to it with the fourth icon (the page with an arrow) in the A-100 menu.
<a href="http://radio.hiof.no/nrk-mpetre-128" aod>NRK</a>
" (this one for adding a Norweigan Radio Channel)
By using this simple solution you could add the channels that are available. However, not all online tv channels allow you to stream via this method due to the website authentication process.
Can I create my own MSP webpage and share it with the rest of the community?
Yes, these are some simple steps to follow.
1. Sign Up at http://www.mspsite.com 2. Download MSP SDK 3. Develop your own MSP plug in 4. Host it on your server 5. Publish the link in http://www.mspsite.com
How do I change the theme?
1. Obtain _theme_.zip from release package or download from www.popcornhour.com/download/_theme_.zip
2. Unzip and modify existing graphics as you wish, but maintain the dimension and filename
3. Modify .config file in root of _theme_ folder to change the colors of the text, color attributes is same as in HTML, e.g. RRGGBB, #RRGGBB, "green", "white-alpha", "black"
4. Copy entire _theme_ folder to the NMT harddisk's Photo folder
5. Reboot (Power + Eject) and new theme will be loaded
Note: Screensaver images ssvr1.jpg ~ ssvr4.jpg must be less than 20Kbytes, due to current limitation.
Confirmed Bugs for NMT/A-100
I have discovered a bug, how can I report it?
Being very vague and posting in the "bug forum" will not help anyone understand your problem. Try using the following template when you are posting a bug. (extracted from NMT forum "Bug Report Mask")
- Bug Description: Playing a PAL 16:9 Anamorphic DVD Iso doesn't display properly.
- It's appears to output to the display with 16:9 widescreen signaling but to actually be formatted for a 4:3 display. This results in a short stretched image with excessive masking at the top and bottom of the screen due to incorrect aspect ratio.
- This has been tested with 2 different DVD Isos (PAL Widescreen 2.40:1 Anamorphic and PAL Widescreen 2.35:1 Anamorphic) and the THX Optimizer found on many Pixar discs.
- Hardware Setup:
- Firmware Version: 01-15-071124-14-POP-402-000
- Apps Version: 00-15-071120-14-POP-402

Info and FAQ/Troubleshooting
Author: cheaper_popcorn
Symptoms:
- High definition matroska file (.mkv) does not play (no picture after buffering or only a few seconds, then a "Could not play!" message shows, and the player returns to the menu screen)
- Stuttering video while playing high definition matroska files (.mkv)
- Artefacts/pixellation/blocks while playing high definition matroska files (.mkv)
- Sound dropouts while playing high definition matroska files with DTS audio
Background:
Many people write in to the forum reporting problems with playing high definition matroska files (.mkv), often HD-DVD, BluRay and HDTV rips they have downloaded online, or occasionally encoded themselves.
The most common symptoms are stuttering video, DTS sound dropouts, failure to play video at all, artefacts/pixellation. [ADD ANY OTHERS?]
Yet, these same files sometimes play without a problem on a home theater PC. Why is that?
The Popcorn Hour players and NMT players are hardware players. [FURTHER EXPLANATION etc.]
MKV FAQ:
Q: I was told that the problem can be solved by remuxing the mkv file to transport stream (.ts) with the application tsmuxer. Why? How do I do this? Does it always work?
A: Especially in the early stages of development, the Popcorn Hour/NMT players were better at rendering transport stream than matroska streams. Transport stream containers are all handled in the Sigma hardware. As a contrast, .mkv files are demuxed by software before video/audio is parsed to the hardware for decoding. Thus, performance is generally better when using a .ts container. Mkv files that are not too far above the officially supported specs will sometimes play better after being remuxed to .ts. The August 2008 final firmware introduced major improvements to mkv playback, due to the introduction of the Haali media splitter(?). Etc.
1. Download tsMuxerGUI from this address: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/tsMuxeR
2. Run the application. Add the mkv file as an input.
3. Press 'Start muxing'
4. You should get a .ts file that is playable (a reboot of the PCH may be required)
(NOTE for earlier versions of tsMuxer:
With early versions of tsMuxer, before version [ADD VERSION NUMBER], the subtitles will not get embedded in the .ts file like they were in the .mkv So if you want the subtitles, you need to run the program mkvExtractGUI http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVExtractGUI
1. Add the mkv file as Input, Select the subtitle track under 'Content' and press the 'Extract' button. You should get an .srt file.
2. The .ts movie and the .srt subtitle files need to have the same filename! (except for the extensions). This currently only works for text-based subs such as .srt. The NMT players do not yet support bitmap-based subs like sub/idx although Syabas have promised they will add sub/idx support in the future.
MKV RE-ENCODING
Q: I have a high definition matroska file that will not play even after I remuxed it to .ts. What can I do?
A: If the file is encoded with too high specs, it may not be enough to remux it to .ts.
In such cases, you have to decide what suits you best: finding another version of the file, or re-encoding it yourself so it follows specs. Which option is better depends on three things, your wallet, your internet download speed and how powerful your computer is.
Re encoding is a taxing process for a computer that uses a lot of CPU resources. Your patience is an important factor. A fast dual-core or preferably, quad-core processor, will speed things up a great deal.
Q: I have an old computer with an old processor (older than Pentium 4 [ADD APPROPRIATE clock freq.] XXX GHz). Can I use it to re-encode high definition files?
A: In that case it would be best to buy or download if your Internet speed can handle it, or upgrade your computer's CPU. Q: I have a P4 single core processor (2.4 - 3.2 GHz). Is it enough to re-encode high definition files?
A: Yes. But it takes time. If you can wait for up to 30 hours for a file to reencode, and you deem that this is better than buying/downloading a new version of the file, then no problem.
Q: What are the industry standards for Full HD content?
A: For full HD content with up to 200 Mbit/s bitrate, profile level 4.1 is used - this is for all kinds of consumer HD content like BluRay, HDDVD, HDTV etc.
Profile level 5.1 is for movie mastering purposes, at 4096x2304 with a bitrate of up to 960 Mbit/s.
Q: So why are there so many High@L5.1 encoded files?
A: Most BluRay rips are made by amateurs, many of whom have powerful PCs. Despite their releases having relatively low bitrates, like 5-10 Mbit/s, they try to use the highest possible specifications, in the belief that it will improve file quality, or simply because 'they can'. In reality, the quality gain for using High@L5.1 profile and many reference frames with such low bitrate material is debatable at best, a fact which is slowly but surely being acknowledged among amateur rippers.
In 2008, an increasing number of scene releases have started to conform to the industry standards, which means they can be played by the NMT players. This does not mean that all bad encodes will soon have disappeared completely. The Internet is not a controlled environment where every single person can be made to follow the same set of specs. That is why some bad encodes will likely continue to be released by amateurs, even though the situation should keep improving gradually.
Modern HTPCs have significantly more processing power than the NMT players, and there are numerous software solutions being developed for playback of high definition material on computer platforms. These software solutions in combination with higher processing power will be more forgiving of badly encoded material than the Popcorn Hour and other current hardware players are able to be.
Q: How do these profile levels work, anyway?
A: It's not the header in the file which say L4.1 or L5.1, that decides the profile level - this is just nominal information sent to the decoder to prepare it for what it will receive. However, this header can be wrong. It's the actual settings that were used during encoding that decide what profile level the file has.
Further, there are a few other parameters in the encode that decide if it's L4.1 or L5.1
profile L4.1
Max macroblocks per second = 245760
Max frame size (macroblocks) = 8192
Max ref.frames 1920x1080 = 4
Max ref.frames 1920x816 = 5
Max ref.frames 1280x720 = 9
Max ref.frames 1280x544 =10
profile L5.1
Max macroblocks per second 983040
Max frame size (macroblocks) 36864
Max ref.frames 1920x1080 = 16
Max ref.frames 1920x816 = 16
Besides the above settings, you can also choose things like VBV buffersize when encoding, and if this is wrongly set for the file, then it could run out of video buffer and start to stutter.
Q: My mkv file stutters, but has no video artefacts. Is this because it is L5.1?
A: Generally speaking, file stutter with no video artefacts is not caused by the file being L4.1 or L5.1. The wrong profile level and too many ref.frames are the main causes of video artefacts. Stutter can be caused by wrong buffer size in the video - or it can be caused by something else like poor network conditions or problems with the disc/disk it is playing from etc. Also some external probl
